Eircom to invest €100m into broadband network

The company also plans to launch a television service that customers can access through their broadband connection.

EIRCOM HAS REVEALED plans to invest more than €100 million in its broadband network, which could deliver speeds of up to 150Mbps.

The company said that it also plans to launch a television service that customers can access through their broadband connection.

Eircom says that the move will significantly upgrade Ireland’s telecommunications infrastructure and that, as part of a multi-year plan, it will extend fibre to 1000,000 premises by next summer and eventually deliver high-speed broadband to one million homes and businesses.

Eircom will invest €100 million in upgrading the existing copper network with two types of  technology – FTTC (supporting speeds of up to 40 Mbps) and FTTH (supporting speeds of up to 150Mbps).

It will then extend a range of entertainment services over the fibre, such as Internet Protocol television (IPTV), video on demand, catch up TV and social media via TV.

Recently, Ireland made the top ten for global broadband speed in a quarterly review carried out by Akamai, the content delivery network. Coming in at number ten, Ireland beat out the likes of the UK and the US, while South Korea secured the top spot, followed by Hong Kong, Japan, the Netherlands and Romania.

The real disaster for Northern Ireland is the clusterf#ck formerly known as Brexit and the support it got from the ludicrous DUP. Do be aware one of the DUP’s recent leaders thinks that the world is about 6000 years old. I would quote Churchill… ““The whole map of Europe has been changed … but as the deluge subsides and the waters fall short we see the dreary steeples of Fermanagh and Tyrone emerging once again.”.

@Smithweiser: Unionism is in its Canute phase. It knows things have changed and not to its benefit and that the old certainties are gone forever. It sees the demographic writing-on-the-wall and is having difficulty allowing that sink in. They know what’s coming and that, really, it’s practically all over bar the waiting and they don’t yet want to allow those thoughts suffuse their thinking bits. They’ll learn, though. Even Canute knew when to get out of the water or be drowned.
