There are five times as many charge stations in Ireland as electric cars

There is a total of 259 electric vehicles in the country and €9.3 million has already been spent on charging infrastructure by the ESB.

THERE ARE CURRENTLY five publicly accessible charge points for every electric vehicle in Ireland, according to new figures released by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.

In response to a parliamentary question, Minister Pat Rabbitte said that there is a total of 259 electric vehicles in Ireland. Last year, there were 23 of these vehicles registered, up from just two back in 2010. Rabbitte said that the ESB, through its ‘ecars’ programme, is “continuing to roll out both publicly accessible charging infrastructure and domestic charge points”, with 1,280 already installed nationally.

The company has spent some €9.3 million to date on this infrastructure. Dublin is the county with the most electric vehicles at 119, with Cork and Wexford following behind with 17 and 16 respectively.

Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan, Roscommon, South Tipperary and Waterford are the only counties that have no registered electric vehicles.

Rabbitte said the ESB has informed his department that its targets are to install at least 1,000 publicly accessible charge points in all main towns and cities and 60 fast chargers in major roads by the end of this year.
