Stable prices and better tech: Why premium EVs are now a smart buy

Improved tech and increases supply means now is the right time to explore electric vehicles.

IF YOU’RE THINKING about upgrading your car, there has never been a better time to consider making the switch to electric.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are on the rise in Ireland, and for good reason. Over time, prices in the market have stabilised, while technology has improved and supply has increased.

In the early years of electric vehicles in Ireland, prices were unpredictable. However, according to the DoneDeal Cars Price Index, prices have stabilised in the last two years. This means that you can shop around for EVs with peace of mind that you’re not about to miss out on a major price drop in the months that follow.

Improvements in technology have also led to major improvements in performance, meaning that EVs are a more practical option than ever before. Many modern EV models many models now comfortably exceed 500 km on a single charge — enough to handle everything from weekday commuting to cross-country trips with ease.

This improvement in energy efficiency also means you’re saving more money, making EVs a more cost-effective option than they may have been in the past. It is now the case that the typical driver saves over €700 per year in running costs compared to a petrol model of similar size.

There are now many EVs on the market that offer savings, sustainability, and stability for anyone who is on the lookout for a car. Take for example the new Skoda Enyaq, which now offers a range of 534km on a full charge. In the same vein, the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Signature 53 kWh pairs aerodynamic efficiency with advanced software to deliver an excellent real-world driving experience.

Also on sale now in Ireland is the 2024 Ford Explorer Premium 77 kWh, which offers you 600 km WLTP range in a spacious, high-tech SUV package. This is enough to drive from Galway to Dublin and back with plenty of mileage left over.

While improvements in battery technology certainly make EVs a more efficient option, there are other advances which simply make the experience of driving an EV feel more luxurious, modern and smooth than in previous times. Intelligent driver-assistance systems, seamless smartphone integration to adaptive regenerative braking and over-the-air software updates are now common features in modern EVs, giving electric cars a cutting-edge feel.

Modern EVs prioritise performance, safety, and comfort, meaning that you, the driver, feel as though you’re in control of something that is so much more than a mode of transport.

If you’re interested in exploring the EV options available to you, there are currently several very formidable options for sale from trusted dealerships across Ireland through DoneDeal Cars
