Total Gridlock

People were stuck in their cars for hours over flooding in Cork

Bad weather and a number of collisions contributed to the issues.

COMMUTERS IN CORK have been experiencing serious delays due to the bad weather and flooding in the city.

There were lengthy delays on the N40 South Ring road, and motorists were advised to divert via the city centre.

The Jack Lynch tunnel was flooded for part of the day, which lead to heavy traffic in the area. The flooding has since been cleared and traffic in the tunnel is light.

A collision took place on the road just before the Kinsale roundabout.

There was also a crash on the Blackrock Road that caused some delays.

A garda spokesperson said that flooding and volume had contributed to the heavy traffic, along with some traffic incidents.

Gardaí are currently dealing with an incident on MacCurtain St in the city centre area.

Some commuters said they had been stuck in their cars for hours in an effort to get home:

Flooding has also just been reported in the Kilkenny area, while the N25 Waterford/Cork road was closed earlier due to flooding.

Met Éireann says that the rain – which has pelted down over parts of the country today – will clear from the east this evening, and that the weather will be dry into the early part of the night.

A status yellow national weather warning is currently in effect, meaning we can expect winds with gusts up to 100km/h tomorrow and Saturday.
