Your handy one-stop Irish gig guide for August

All the gigs going on around the country this month.

AUGUST IS UPON us and although the days  may be getting a little shorter, that’s no reason to let summer go without a proper send off.

To help with that ‘end of the summer’ angst, we’ve rounded up the best of the gigs coming up in August for Dublin and around the country.

So, get your diaries out – here’s the best of what’s on around the country in August.

Dublin

  • The Dandy Warhols – playing The Academy and bringing back all those mid-nineties memories, woo hoo hoo. Tickets are €25 plus booking fee and you can grab them here. 3 August.
  • The Beatyard - A ‘seaside celebration of music, food, games and more’ held in Dun Laoghaire and now in its 10th year, there’s music from acts like Nenah Cherry, Tandem Felix and Lindstrom. Tickets are €59 plus booking fee for Saturday or Sunday or €95 plus booking fee for the weekend. 1 - 2 August. Info here.
  • SOJA – formerly known as the Soldiers of Jah Army this Grammy-nominated Reggae band is playing The Academy on Wednesday 19 August. Tickets are €29.

Munster

  • Legend of Luke Kelly - a tribute to Dubliner member Luke Kelly, multi-instrumentalist Chris Kavanagh has been giving sell-out performances of Luke’s music. Tickets are €15 and the gig is being held at the Gleneagle Hotel, Co. Kerry. 6 August. 
  • Deerhoof – This American indie band whose sound veers between pop, rock and roll and avant garde will be playing Cyprus Avenue in Cork on Tuesday 18th August. Tickets are €18.35.
  • The Wolfe Tones – will be playing the Gleneagle Hotel, Co. Kerry 1 August. Ticket information is right here.

Leinster

  • Ash - Ash are playing Le Cheile Festival at The Cinema Stage Club in Meath on 2 August and tickets are €31.25 here.
  • Paddy Casey and Band - U2 supporter Paddy Casey and his band are playing Kavanagh’s in Portlaoise on the 2 August and tickets are €22.90.
  • Sufjan Stevens - Indie darling Stevens is playing The Helix on Saturday 29 August. Tickets start at €40.

Ulster

  • Legend – A Tribute to Bob Marley - Getting August off to a good start with this tribute to Bob Marley at the Empire Music Hall in Belfast on 1 August. Tickets are £11 plus booking fee here.
  • Feile an Phobail – The Human League and Mark Almond will be at the Falls Park in Belfast on Sunday 2 August. There are a week’s worth of gigs and events at the Feile an Phobail, if those aren’t your bag. Tickets are £20 plus booking fee here.
  • Tyler the Creator – the American rapper and record producer will be gigging at The Limelight, Belfast on Tuesday 25 August. Tickets are £22.

Connaught

  • Fleadh Cheoil - The Fleadh, in Sligo, is a competition for amateur musicians and is the largest festival of Irish Music with audiences of up to 400,00 over the nine days. Not only are there competitions where you can check out some serious talent, there are also trad sessions with musicians such as Cathy Jordan, one of the finest traditional singers in Ireland today. Tickets are available here. 9-16th August.
  • David Kitt – The Roisin Dubh is playing host to singer songwriter David Kitt on Thursday 13 August. Tickets are €17.35 here.
  • Nathan Carter – Nathan is an Irish country music singer and he’ll be playing the Diamond Coast Hotel, in Sligo on Thursday 13 August. Tickets are €27.65.

These are gigs that you should be grabbing tickets for while they’re hot.

  • The Waterboys are heading to Sligo, Belfast, Galway and Dublin from 24 Oct – 7 November. 
  • Christy Moore will be touring Munster and Connaught in August, September and October.
  • Little Mix is coming to Ireland and will play one night at the 3 Arena on the 30 March 2016.
