GINO KENNY HAS been co-copted onto South Dublin County Council after his People Before Profit colleague Darragh Adelaide resigned his seat “for personal reasons”. 

In a statement on Instagram, the party announced that it has selected the former Dublin Mid-West TD to take Adelaide’s seat. 

“Darragh has been an exemplary councillor. He has represented and fought for his constituents and for working class people across SDCC,” the statement read.

“He has also played a central role in standing up to racism and the far right and building a vibrant antiracist movement in Dublin and beyond. People Before Profit is extremely proud of the work Darragh has done.”

The party said it is “delighted” that Kenny has accepted the nomination to the seat. 

“We know he will work to represent the people of Clondalkin and will work with our other councillors on SDCC to ensure that there is a voice for radical change on the Council. He will be taking up the position in April at the monthly SDCC Council meeting.”

Adelaide, an activist who got involved in politics in 2019, was elected as a councillor for Clondalkin in the 2024 local elections. 

Kenny, who was first elected to the Dáil in 2016, lost his seat after being eliminated on the 9th count in the 2024 general election. 

He served as a South Dublin County Councillor from 2009, and ran twice unsuccessfully (in 2007 and 2011) before getting elected in 2016.
