'A real honour, I love what I do': Jessie Buckley wins Golden Globe to continue her awards run

President Catherine Connolly said it was a fantastic recognition of the actor’s “outstanding work”.

LAST UPDATE | 12 Jan

JESSIE BUCKLEY HAS been named best female actor at the Golden Globes for her role in Hamnet.

It’s shaping up to be a successful awards season for the Kerry native who has won a Critics Choice Award and has been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award, with the Oscar nominations due out next week.

In her acceptance speech, Buckley paid tribute to the cast and crew she worked alongside.

“It was such an extraordinary set to be a part of because we were telling the story of the most famous Brit who ever lived. And we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish, a mostly Polish crew.”

Buckley gushed about being nominated alongside her fellow actors including Julia Roberts, who she described as “a hero to us all”.

She concluded: “This is a real, real honour. I love what I do and I love being part of this industry.”

President Catherine Connolly was among those sending congratulations to Buckley this morning, saying in a statement it was a fantastic recognition of the actor’s “outstanding work”.

Her co-star Paul Mescal was nominated in the best supporting actor category, but was passed over for Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value).

Highlights of the ceremony, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, will be shown on RTÉ2 and the RTÉ Player tonight at 9pm.

Hamnet, a historical drama, is based on the book by author Maggie O’Farrell, who is from Coleraine, Co Derry.

Directed by Chloé Zhao, it also won the best motion picture (drama) award.

The film explores the relationship between William Shakespeare (Mescal) and his wife Agnes Hathaway (Buckley) in the aftermath of their 11-year-old son’s death.

One Battle After Another also had a good night, winning four of its nine nominations.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s screwball thriller, which centers on an aging revolutionary played by Leonardo DiCaprio, collected awards for best picture (musical or comedy), best director, best screenplay and best supporting actress for Teyana Taylor.

But in the closely watched lead actor category, DiCaprio was passed over in favor of Timothee Chalamet’s performance as an ambitious 1950s table tennis player in Marty Supreme.
