Former Lord Mayor Hazel Chu in the running to become Green Party deputy leader

Chu will go up against Louth Councillor Marianne Butler for the deputy leadership.

FORMER DUBLIN LORD Mayor and current Dublin City Councillor Hazel Chu is going up against Louth Councillor Marianne Butler to become the next deputy leader of the Green Party.

In October last year, the party confirmed that its deputy leader, Róisín Garvey, resigned from her role.

Garvey, who was appointed to the Seanad by Taoiseach Micheál Martin in 2020, became deputy leader of the Green Party in July 2024. She replaced former TD Catherine Martin in the role.

Garvey failed to win a seat in the Clare constituency in 2024′s general election and subsequently did not contest the 2025 Seanad election two months later.

It is understood that Garvey has also resigned from the party.

Voting for the new deputy leader role opens on the 26 January and closes on the 28  January at midday. The result of the deputy leadership contest will be announced after voting has been completed and ratified.

The party said it would like to express its warm gratitude to former Deputy Leader Róisín Garvey for her work in the role.

Party leader Roderic O’Gorman has said the Green Party is still in “rebuild” mode after last year’s bruising general election.

The party lost all but one of its 12 Dáil seats in the election, with O’Gorman retaining his seat.

Meanwhile, Malcolm Noonan was the sole Green to win a seat in the Seanad election earlier this year.
