Gwyneth Paltrow faces backlash after starring in ad for luxury apartment development in Israel

The Oscar-winning actress has been criticised online for her decision to promote a luxury real estate development while Israel continues to kill Palestinians in Gaza.

HOLLYWOOD ACTOR AND wellness entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow is facing criticism after appearing in a new advertising campaign for a luxury apartment development in Israel as the country’s genocidal war in Gaza continues and violence escalates in the occupied West Bank.

Paltrow stars in a campaign for 51 PARK, a high-end residential project in Herzliya, a wealthy coastal city north of Tel Aviv.

Developed by Israeli real estate company Aviv Melisron, the project consists of two 51-storey towers overlooking Herzliya Park and features luxury amenities including a swimming pool, cinema and retail spaces.

In the advert, filmed largely in New York, Paltrow is shown jogging through a park before telling a driver to take her to “51 Park”.

“New York?” the driver asks.

“Herzliya. Israel,” Paltrow replies.

The campaign has attracted backlash online, with critics questioning the decision to promote a luxury real estate development while Israel continues to kill Palestinians in Gaza.

Among those criticising Paltrow’s involvement was Palestinian-American activist Alana Hadid, sister of models Gigi and Bella Hadid.

“The level of unhinged capitalism is astounding,” she wrote on social media.

“Have you opened a newspaper or watched the news? This is not even tone deaf, it’s actually complicit.”

US journalist Rania Khalek similarly slammed the marketing as “shameful”, adding that Paltrow’s decision to star in the advertisement was “like advertising luxury villas in Nazi Germany during peak Holocaust”.

The comment sections under Paltrow’s recent posts have been flooded by people condemning her decision to feature in the advertisement.

According to Palestinian medical authorities, Israeli forces have killed more than 72,900 Palestinians and injured over 173,000 since October 2023. Nearly 1,000 Palestinians have been killed since a ceasefire agreement took effect in April, according to local health officials.

Critics also pointed to Israel’s forced displacement of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, where illegal settlement expansion continues despite widespread international condemnation.

Last week, a UN Commission of Inquiry report found that Israeli authorities were directly enabling and supporting settler violence against Palestinians.

The report documented killings, assaults, forced displacement and sexual violence carried out by settlers, and said such attacks function as part of a broader effort to entrench settlements, annex Palestinian territory and remove Palestinians from their land.

Paltrow’s controversy comes just days after the Oscar-winning actress hosted Trae Stephens, co-founder of military technology company Anduril, on her Goop podcast.

Anduril develops military drones, missiles, surveillance systems and other battlefield technologies used by western armed forces.

During the interview, Stephens discussed defence technology, warfare and military ethics, while Paltrow spoke about her support for strengthening military capabilities.

Paltrow has previously expressed support for Israeli hostages and has spoken publicly about her Jewish heritage.

Paltrow has not yet publicly responded to the criticism.
