THE BOOK WRITTEN by Adolf Hitler during his imprisonment for a failed coup in 1923 is set to be republished in Germany in 2015 after its copyright expires.
Though not officially banned in Germany, the German state of Bavaria has held copyright and used it to prevent its republication.
In anticipation of that copyright’s expiration in 2015, Bavaria is involved in the compilation of a new edition of the text which will feature critical commentary. One edition will feature expert commentary directed at students, the Abendzeitung München reports.
There were concerns that the publication of a text without commentary could leave it open to being ‘taken over’ by neo-Nazis and extremist groups. Bavarian finance minister Markus Söder said this edition would feature commentary to help students to interpret the dangerous ideologies of the book.
Hitler’s anti-Semitic text was written while he was jailed for the failed Munich Beer Hall Putsch of 1923. The Allies transferred the rights to the book over to the Bavarian state.
