This ad should stop you from texting and driving

Honda tells its drivers about the devastating effects of driving and texting.

Honda / YouTube

TEXTING WHILE DRIVING makes people three times more likely to get into a car crash, according to statistics from the US.

Despite this, the vast majority of young people engage in the risky behaviour while behind the wheel.

Last week, Leo Varadkar confirmed that texting while driving is “completely prohibited” in Ireland.

A survey carried out earlier this year found that texting was cited by over ten per cent of drivers as the activity that caused most “near misses”.

Gardaí have urged drivers to stay safe on this long, holiday weekend – and that includes putting the phone away.

Watch the video – an ad from Honda – above. It might just convince you.

Gardaí have issued 45,000 penalty points notices this year

Banned: Texting while driving now ‘completely prohibited’

True – most people who text or ring you while you’re driving are only contacting you to annoy you. “have you left”, “where are you”, “will you pick me up some…”, “did you remember to get…”, “you’re late” etc….

Puts you in a bad mood too….& driving in a bad mood doesn’t help either. I usually put my phone in the boot so nobody annoys me…..ignorance is bliss & not answering your phone because you were driving is now an indisputable excuse for being un-contactable.

It’s just a realistic representation of how people write. Dnt txt & drv looks minimalist and is more memorable. It’s got nothing to do with grammar. You mean spelling. Bad grammar (which is impossible for native speakers most of the time) would be ‘Did you left yet?’, for example.

Studies have shown that having a child in the backseat of your car makes you more likely to crash than having your phone does. They’re not banning kids in cars though. Not that I advocate texting and driving, I don’t. I just think it’s interesting. It’s impossible to remove all the risk, no matter what happens.

Does the law include Siri. Google glasses. Voice texting. Any number of things to come. That and the penalty for texting and driving is a complete joke. No deterrent

The RSA have known quite well for years that texting while driving is worse than drink driving yet they’re reluctant to punish those caught at least the same as drink drivers. How the fukk can they give the same penalty to those caught just holding a phone (2 penalty points) as text driving (2 pp) and driving down the wrong side of a motorway (2 pp). Gay Byrne, do those who care about road safety a favour, and resign.

I used to post comments on the journal while driving on the motorway to Kilkenny. Motorway driving is so boring.
I would NOT recommend it though. You keep on getting replies to your comments and then ya can’t quickly answer them so it’s frustrating. So I don’t do it anymore.
