Gaeltacht island project to be the first to get funding under €275bn National Development Plan

Two ministers will travel to Inis Oírr to unveil the project today.

A GAELTACHT ISLAND project has been selected to be the first to benefit from the newly reviewed National Development Plan €275 billion fund, it was announced today.

Gaeltacht minister Dara Calleary and Jack Chambers – who holds the Public Expenditure portfolio – are travelling to Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands, to announce €35.75m in funding for a major extension of the quay and breakwater on the island.

The project is described as a “flagship infrastructure project under the Government’s National Development Plan”.

The development comprises the construction of a concrete pier extension and a breakwater, designed to provide better protection from waves and storms within the harbour, along with increased berthage space for vessels, particularly during the summer months when demand is greatest due to tourist traffic.

Minister Calleary said that the funding announced today was the largest amount for a single project approved by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht since its establishment in 2017.

“The overall cost of this project is €35.75m, with over €30m for the construction contract alone,” he said.

“This investment in Inis Oírr will ensure safe year-round access for island residents and visitors alike, with better facilities for ferries, and will support the community to thrive for generations to come.”

Chambers pointed out that this Gaeltacht island project was the first to be announced since the publication of the revised National Development Plan and its €275 billion price tag last month.

“This demonstrates the Government’s commitment to delivering essential infrastructure across our country, including our islands and our Gaeltacht communities,” said the minister.

Galway County Council is the lead agency on the project and a contractor, Ward and Burke Construction Ltd, has been appointed to carry out the pier construction following a two-year tendering process.
