Polish peacekeeper serving with Irish troops injured in Lebanon

A spokesperson for the Irish defence forces said Irish personnel secured the area and evacuated the injured member.

A POLISH MEMBER of the Irish-Polish UNIFIL Battalion sustained minor injuries after their patrol was targeted by a roadside device today.

The device detonated as their vehicle passed it.

An Irish Defence Forces’ spokesperson said: “Irish personnel of the Quick Reaction Force were launched immediately to secure the scene and the casualty was evacuated to UNP 2-45.”

UNP 2-45 is also known as Camp Shamrock, where Irish and Polish members are based in south Lebanon, with members from the Armed Forces of Malta and Hungary.

The injured member was then brought to a medical facility using the Irish armoured ambulance and medics, the spokesperson continued.

”This incident highlights the professionalism, preparedness and training of our Army personnel deployed to UNIFIL, who continue to operate in a volatile region.

“All Irish personnel are well and accounted for. The Irish Defence Forces remains resolute in its commitment to UNIFIL and acting as the eyes and ears of the international community as the conflict continues.”

There are more than 300 Irish troops based in the south at a number of locations with the United Nations peacekeeping force UNIFIL. Since Israeli scaled up its offensive on Lebanon, and launched an incursion earlier this month, Irish troops have reported small arms fire and shelling in the region.
