Inside Houzz, the international home design phenomenon that started as a side project

We paid a visit to the company’s London office.

WHEN EMPLOYMENT COMMENCES in the Houzz London office, every new starter is required to fill out a questionnaire, which among other things asks employees to specify their favourite cake.

This information is carefully stored until a birthday rolls around when said employee can expect a beautifully crafted multi-tiered sugar filled creation.

On the day this writer visited the offices there were no less than four birthdays and four perfect personalised cakes.

Houzz is a design and remodelling website and community that combines design inspiration with a network of professionals. Launched in 2009 by Adi Tatarko and Alon Cohen, the business grew from the founders’ frustrations with their own renovation project.

Initially the pair built a community of twenty parents from their kid’s school, and a few architects and designers from the San Francisco Bay Area. But Houzz soon grew into a global business, with homeowners and home professionals outside San Francisco asking Tatarko and Cohen to open more categories on Houzz and expand to other areas.

As can be expected, the Houzz offices in both Berlin and London are magnificently designed, with meeting rooms resembling exotic spaces like rainforests, beaches and Swiss chalets. An open-plan layout facilitates ongoing collaboration and team building.

Unique quips include hidden rooms, concealed behind faux fridge doors and scooter docks. Vast dining spaces further a culture of teamwork, community and friendship.

Houzz now connects millions of homeowners, home design enthusiasts and home improvement professionals around the world and empowers them with technology. The company has offices globally including the UK, Berlin, US and Australia and employs more than 2,000 people globally.
