PRINTS ARE THE ultimate home hack – whether you’re a homeowner or a renter you can update any space with these affordable, unique and Irish pieces. Not only do prints add personality and character to any room, but they’re also affordable and a great way to invest in up-and-coming artists. Irish artists have embraced printmaking, offering a style and size for every interior aesthetic. Here are five exciting print makers we have our eye on this month.
Claire Schorman
Based in Co. Wicklow, Claire Schorman is an illustrator and designer who creates hand-illustrated prints, cards, stationery and custom art pieces. Having ditched her corporate job, she now designs bold, colourful prints that celebrate Irish culture (see her ‘The Messages’ print below based on Irish grocery shop essentials), landscapes, flowers and nature. Available in A3, A4, or A5, each print comes packaged in a compostable protective sleeve.
Sketchico
When couple Juan Sotoparra and Kerry Quinlan couldn’t find the right artwork for their Galway home, they decided to create their own. Architect Juan, originally from Venezuela, and his partner Kerry became inundated with requests from friends and family and Sketchico was born. Today, they design prints of iconic landmarks, sports, and wildlife each one beginning as a photograph before being digitally manipulated to create the final piece. Choose from framed and unframed prints available in a selection of sizes, ranging in price from €30 to €150.
Alice Fitzgerald
Alice Fitzgerald’s work will really resonate with mid-Century art and design lovers. Influenced by Matisse and Jean Arp, Alice creates colourful abstract pieces from her Dublin studio. Her work is already held in several permanent collections including the collection at Dublin City Council. For those who wish to start their own art collection, investing in Alice’s prints is a sophisticated and timeless way to begin. Prices start from €100.
Tidings
Tidings founder Niamh Gillespie has many creative strings to her bow. As an award-winning designer, she has worked across fashion and interiors, creating unique, forever pieces from beautiful scarves to home textiles. Her prints, inspired by nature and typography, are created using a technique called Giclée – a printing process that results in rich tones and colours. These detailed pieces will make you want to revisit them time and time again. Each print is signed and numbered and her limited-edition prints are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
RNM Design
As the Irish language continues to experience a resurgence in popular culture, RNM Design’s prints are ahead of the trend. Founder and artist Rachael Ní Mheilbhín is inspired by the Irish language, native landscape and Irish culture. Juxtaposing traditional icons and words with neon colours and graphic patterns, these prints are the coolest kids on the block. And with ‘Grá’, ‘Cairde’ and ‘Clann’ themed art pieces, these also make for terrific wedding, birthday or anniversary gifts too. Prints come in A4 size and cost €18.
