IVAN YATES WILL return to Newstalk to co-present its breakfast show, TheJournal.ie has learned.

The 53-year-old, who has just been discharged from bankruptcy in the UK, is due back on air this coming Wednesday, 4 September.

He will be reunited with former co-presenter Chris Donoghue for Newstalk Breakfast between 7am and 10am.

Yates, a former TD for Wexford, filed records with the UK’s Insolvency Service recently and secured a clean bill of financial health yesterday. He had filed for personal insolvency in the jurisdiction a year ago after AIB failed to have him declared bankrupt in the High Court in Dublin under the more stringent Irish bankruptcy laws.

Yates has been living in Swansea since April 2012 following the collapse of his Celtic Bookmakers firm. His last broadcast with Newstalk was on 3 April 2012.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Yates said he has “returned to Ireland and intends to resume life with his family and friends in this country”.

He will be interviewed by Pat Kenny during the broadcaster’s first Newstalk show tomorrow morning. The presenter said he will discuss his 16 months in Wales, his battle over his debts with AIB, the forfeiture of his assets, including his family home and farm in Enniscorthy, and the wider issue of ‘bankruptcy tourism’.

“Having completed my discharge from bankruptcy, which I have done in full compliance with all relevant regulations and legal requirements in both the UK and Ireland, my aim now is to make a fresh start in Ireland with a new media career, and insofar as possible, to put behind me the difficulties of the past three years since the failure of my family bookmaking business,” said Yates. “I look forward to getting down to work and to rebuilding my home in Ireland with my wife Deirdre and my family.”

He is also due to sub in for Vincent Browne on this TV3 show this week.
