4 of a kind

4 of a kind: Country homes with charming ivy up the walls

From a four-bed manor in Meath to a five-bed in west Cork.

THERE’S NO DOUBT that, provided it’s maintained well, ivy adds a certain charm and character to a house of any size, whether it’s a modern build or a period property.

For anyone who doesn’t fancy starting from scratch, this week, we’ve found four around the country that make ivy the main feature on the exterior walls.

Bandon, Co Cork – €675,000

Bracken is a five-bed home that dates to 1918 and sits on half an acre in the west Cork town of Bandon. Full of original features, from the cornicing to the black and white hall tiles, this is a bright and spacious home that spans 278 m². Inside comprises a living room that leads to a drawing room that has a conservatory off it. The dining room benefits from a pantry while there is a utility room off the large open plan kitchen and dining space. Two bedrooms reside on the ground floor with the remaining three above.

The gardens are in great nick and include an array of trees and hedges that tie in with the ivy covered walls beautifully. In terms of location, you have the best west Cork has to offer on your doorstep while the airport is a mere twenty minute drive away.

Mayglass, Co Wexford – €475,000

With a name like Elderflower, it’s hard not to expect a home that could be in a fairytale – particularly on first look. This detached four-bedder in Mayglass sits on almost two acres of gardens that lead onto a stream and are also home to two outbuildings. Inside comprises a small yet pristine hallway that leads to the dining room, kitchen, sitting room, a utility, bathroom and one of the bedrooms which is currently an office. The remaining three bedrooms sit upstairs, one of which is en suite with the other sharing the family bathroom.

Enjoy the sunny south east, seeing as there are plenty of beaches just a short drive away, while Wexford town is 15 minutes away, as is Rosslare Europort.

Fordstown, Co Meath – €1,500,000

The oldest house in today’s round-up is Clonleason House, which is a Georgian two-storey home with four bedrooms that spans 268 m². Sitting on  6.5 acres, the grandeur begins from the gravelled avenue that approaches it. Inside, the house has maintained everything you would expect from an 18th century home but with the added bonus of modern upgrades. There’s no question that this is a home full of stories and history. For example, the feature marble fireplace is from the Ritz Hotel, Piccadilly.

There’s also a gate lodge that’s 55 m² and even that comprises high ceilings, an open fire, French doors that open onto a private patio area along with an appointed fitted kitchen, a large bedroom and a bathroom. Clonleason House is just five minutes from Fordstown with local amenities and 10 kilometres from the heritage town of Kells.

Claregalway, Co Galway – €475,000

Just outside Claregalway village in Co Galway sits Clogher, a four-bed family home that’s quite new. Built in 2004, it nods to period properties of the past but has a very appealing B3 BER, so cosiness is guaranteed from the offset. Spanning almost 190 m², the ground floor comprises an entrance hall that leads to an open-plan kitchen and dining area that’s drenched in natural light, and a separate reading room that moves onto the living area. A bathroom and a large garage area which is home to a utility room completes the floor.

Upstairs sit three big bedrooms. The main bedrooms has an en suite and a walk-in wardrobe, while the other two share the a main family bathroom. Claregalway village is just 2 kilometres away, whilst access to Oranmore and Galway city are both well-connected to the area.
