Ireland's Jake McCarthy wins bronze at World Rowing Championships in Shanghai

IRELAND’S JAKE MCCARTHY has won a bronze medal today at the World Rowing Championships in Shanghai in China.

The Skibbereen Rowing Club rower finished third in the lightweight men’s single. McCarthy produced a composed and consistent performance, maintaining third position throughout the race and finishing with a powerful sprint to close the gap before crossing the line in 06:59.07 to secure his first-ever Senior World Championship medal.

Siobhán McCrohan, from Tribesmen Rowing Club, finished fourth earlier in her final of the lightweight women’s single. McCrohan was in fifth position behind Austria until the third quarter of the race but moved into fourth by the 1500 metre mark. She produced a determined finish but was unable to reach the medal positions, crossing the line in 07:37.25. 

Finally, Tiarnán O’Donnell (Lee Rowing Club) and Sadhbh Ní Laoighre (Bantry Rowing Club) finished third in the B final of PR2 mixed pairs. The crew maintained their position throughout the race and finished strongly but were unable to catch the Mexican boat ahead, completing the race in 09:00.35.
