‘I am not a Nazi’: Kanye West apologises for antisemitic remarks and ‘reckless behaviour’

Ye said in early 2025, he ‘fell into a four-month long manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behaviour that destroyed my life’.

YE, FORMERLY KANYE West, has apologised for his “reckless behaviour” and antisemitic remarks in a full-page advert in The Wall Street Journal.

The advert is titled “To Those I’ve Hurt” and details his mental health issues.

In 2002, Ye was in a near-fatal collision after he had fallen asleep while driving – he recorded the hit song “Through the Wire” about the experience.

In his apology published in The Wall Street Journal, Ye writes that this collision “caused injury to the right frontal lobe of my brain”.

However, he said the “focus” following this collision was on the “visible damage” and that a “deeper injury inside my skull went unnoticed”.

He claimed that “comprehensive scans were not done” and that it wasn’t until 2023 that he was “properly diagnosed”.

Ye said this “medical oversight caused serious damage to my mental health and led to my bipolar type-1 diagnosis”.

“Bipolar disorder comes with its own defence system. Denial.

“When you’re manic, you don’t think you’re sick. You think everyone else is overreacting.

“You feel like you’re seeing the world more clearly than ever, when in reality you’re losing your grip entirely.”

Ye added that he “lost touch with reality” and that he “said and did things I deeply regret”.

“Looking back, I became detached from my true self,” said Ye.

“In that fractured state, I gravitated toward the most destructive symbol I could find, the swastika, and even sold T-shirts bearing it.”

Last February, Ye’s website was taken down after it started selling t-shirts with swastikas.

Ye said in his apology that he cannot recall many of the “disconnected moments” that resulted in his “poor judgment and reckless behaviour” and that these moments “oftentimes feels like an out-of-body-experience”.

He added that he regrets and is “deeply mortified by my actions in that state”.

“It does not excuse what I did though,” added Ye.

“I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.”

Last summer, Australia cancelled Ye’s visa over his song glorifying Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Ye had released “Heil Hitler” on 8 May, the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

Ye also said that in early 2025, he “fell into a four-month long manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behaviour that destroyed my life”.

“As the situation became increasingly unsustainable, there were times I didn’t want to be here anymore,” he added.

Ye said he “hit rock bottom a few months ago” and that his wife, Bianca Censori, encouraged him to “finally get help” – Ye was previously married to Kim Kardashian.

Meanwhile, Ye also apologised to the Black community, which he said is “unquestionably the foundation of who I am”.

Ye also revealed that he “found comfort in Reddit forums of all places”.

“I read their stories and realised that I was not alone,” said Ye.

“It’s not just me who ruins their entire life once a year despite taking meds every day and being told by the so-called best doctors in the world that I am not bipolar, but merely experiencing ‘symptoms of autism’.”

Last February, Ye said he had been diagnosed with autism.

“As I find my new baseline and new centre through an effective regime of medication, therapy, exercise, and clean living, I have newfound, much-needed clarity,” said Ye.

“I’m not asking for sympathy, or a free pass, though I aspire to earn your forgiveness. I write today simply to ask for your patience and understanding as I find my way home.”
