Price of electricity to come down from December after cut to PSO levy

The monthly PSO levy has been reduced by fifty cent for domestic customers and more than €2 for small businesses

THE PUBLIC SERVICE Obligation (PSO) levy is to be decreased from December, reducing electricity prices for customers across Ireland.

This revised levy will apply to all electricity customers from 1 December 2025 to 30 September 2026, the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) has announced.

From 1 December 2025, domestic customers will see a revised monthly charge of €1.46, while small commercial customers will pay €5.65, following a review of updated data received during a due diligence process.

The initial PSO levy for the 2025/26 period was €2.01 and €7.77 for domestic and small commercial customers, respectively.

The PSO levy is a charge or payment made to all electricity customers to fund renewable energy schemes in Ireland.

When these schemes are operating with a profit due to high wholesale electricity prices, they are required to pay back customers through a PSO Payment. Conversely, when wholesale electricity prices are low, the proceeds of the PSO Levy are used to contribute to the additional costs incurred by PSO-supported electricity generation which are not recovered in the electricity market.
