A MAN HAS appeared in court charged with murdering mother-of-two Amy Doherty in Derry

Connor McNamee (30), of Summer Meadow Mews in Derry, was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon, a kitchen knife, and possession of a class A controlled drug, cocaine.

Court papers said the murder charge was aggravated by reason of involving domestic abuse.

He appeared at Derry Magistrates’ Court this afternoon via video link.

There was no application for bail and he was remanded in custody until 23 April.

Police launched a murder investigation after Amy Doherty was found badly injured in a property in the Summer Meadows area of Derry at around 1.20am on Saturday, 21 March.

The 28-year-old was taken to hospital, but died from her injuries a short time later.

Amy’s funeral took place yesterday and parish priest Fr Joe Gormley said that mourners would be thinking of Rhea and Ronan, Amy’s two children, and would be trying to “make sense of the events of last Saturday”.

Fr Gormley described her as a “dedicated care worker” who lifted the spirits of patients at Altnagelvin Hospital, in Derry, during the pandemic.

“She’d always try and find fun, find humour, particularly in those dark days when people were very afraid,” he said.

He added that the “heart of her care” was her two children, who “are the centre of our thoughts and prayers today and beyond”.

A vigil in her memory will take place later today in Derry.
