Tributes paid to Meath footballer and teacher following sudden death in Australia

29-year-old Sarah Halpenny is understood to have taken ill and died last weekend.

COMMUNITIES ACROSS IRELAND and Australia have paid tribute following the sudden passing of Sarah Halpenny, a Meath footballer and teacher, who died unexpectedly in Melbourne at the age of 29.

She is understood to have taken ill and died last Sunday.

A native of Lobinstown, Co Meath, Sarah began her ladies’ football career with Dee Rangers and represented Meath at several underage levels, including as part of the 2012 Leinster U16-winning panel.

She continued her football journey abroad with St Kevin’s GAA in Melbourne, joining the club in late 2023 and quickly becoming a valued member.

St Kevin’s described her as “an outstanding defender, determined, fearless in the tackle and tireless in her workrate.”

Meath LGFA extended its condolences, noting that Sarah will be remembered for her passion, sportsmanship, and the warmth she brought to every team she played for.

Chairperson Tommy Cannon said: “Sarah was an exceptional Meath footballer whose talent and passion shone brightly. She will forever be remembered for her kindness, her warmth, and the positive impact she had on everyone around her.”

Sarah also taught at Kingscourt National School in Co Cavan before moving to Australia, where she was part of the teaching staff at Sacred Heart Primary School in St Albans, Melbourne.

Former colleagues described her as a “person of warmth, kindness and an engaging personality that lit up every room she entered,” noting her instrumental role in promoting wellbeing and sports in her schools.

Her family includes her parents David and Yvonne, sisters Emma and Grace, and her partner Ciarán.

Dee Rangers paid tribute to her as “an important part of our Division 2 and Division 1 League-winning teams in recent years” and extended sympathies to her family and friends both in Ireland and Australia.

A candlelight vigil will be held on Saturday evening at 8:30pm at Syddan GFC in Co Meath to remember Sarah, with attendees encouraged to bring a candle.

A GoFundMe page has also been established to assist in returning Sarah’s remains to Ireland.
