Micheál Martin and Holly Cairns tied for public support, says new poll

A NEW POLL shows public support for Fianna Fáil leader and Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns is tied.
The poll, conducted by the Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks, places both leaders on an approval rating of 39%. This is a two-point increase for Martin and a two-point drop for Cairns on polling last month.
Fine Gael leader Simon Harris saw a one-point increase to an approval rating of 34% and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald dropped two points to 33%. Labour leader Ivana Bacik dropped one point to 31%.
Sinn Féin remains the most popular party on 22%. Fianna Fáil’s approval rating is at 19% and Fine Gael is at 17%.
On the issues those polled flagged as most concerning, the cost of living was up ten points on last month to 53% – noted as likely the result of the war in Iran. The US and Israeli-led war in the Middle East has caused price hikes for fuel and economic uncertainty globally.
Housing is the second-biggest issue at 45%.
Despite Government leaders seeing moderate approval increases, 60% of those polled disapprove of how Government is handling its job.
