BATCHES OF SMA baby formula have been recalled by the food safety regulator over the presence of a toxin that can cause vomiting.

In a recall notice issued this evening, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) warned batches of eight types of Nestlé’s SMA formula – including formula for infants, for premature infants, and for babies over six months – may contain cereulide.

The FSAI said cereulide toxin is produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. It is extremely heat-resistant, and consuming foods that contain it can lead to nausea and severe vomiting.

Symptoms can appear within five hours, and the illness can last 6-24 hours, the regulator said.

To date there have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with the products in question, and the recall is precautionary, Nestlé and the FSAI said this evening. Nestlé has asked customers who purchased any of the batches to contact it.

Nestlé has recalled multiple batches of some of the products, including five batches each of its SMA First Infant Milk and its SMA Alfamino for babies with cows’ milk protein allergy.

Parents should not feed any more of the implicated products to infants or young children.
