11 of the most exciting new cars arriving in 182, according to a motoring journalist

From a new BMW coupe to Jaguar’s first all-electric model, Melanie May picks her favourites.

THE 182 REGISTRATION period kicks off in a few weeks, and if you’re in the market for a new car you won’t be short of new and updated models to choose from.

Whether you are upgrading to something flasher, downsizing, trading-in, buying your first car or switching from a diesel or petrol to hybrid or electric model, I’ve rounded up eleven new cars on my radar for 182.

All of the below will be coming to a dealer near you soon, wearing fresh new 182 plates…

1. BMW 8 Series Coupe

Newspress Newspress

The gorgeous looking BMW 8 Series Coupe goes on sale in November, but you can order yours now with prices from €125,000. The cabin has a 2+2 layout and there’s a generous 420-litre boot, meaning it should be somewhat practical as a luxury cruising and family motor.

If you are looking for extra engine power you’ll need to hold off until 2019 though, when the hardcore 600hp M8 and a plugin hybrid version are added to the range.

2. Citroen C5 Aircross

Newspress Newspress

Citroen’s new flagship SUV, the C5 Aircross will launch in Europe at the end of 2018. The five-seat SUV has three individual rear seats that recline, fold and slide and, depending on how far you slide those seats, the boot can hold 580 to 720 litres of cargo.

From launch there will be four engine options, and at the end of 2019, the C5 Aircross will be offered as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), a first for Citroen.

3. Ford Focus

Ford Ford

The all-new fourth-generation Ford Focus is expected in showrooms in August and will be available in estate form as well as hatchback. There will also be a Focus Active model for those looking for a more rugged version and a Focus Vignale model for those looking for a more premium version.

Petrol power comes from three-cylinder engines in 1.0 and 1.5-litre capacities providing five different power outputs, while diesel power comes from a 1.5 and 2.0-litre unit. Both six-speed manual and new eight-speed automatic transmissions will be available.

4. Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar Jaguar

Jaguar’s first all-electric car hits showrooms in time for the 182 registration period with prices for entry-level ‘S’ models starting at €84,085 including available grants.

For that money, you are getting a whole lot of car with a huge quantity of driving aids, safety systems and advanced technology. In terms of range, Jaguar quotes 480km. The I-Pace is a fantastic option for those looking for a spacious family SUV with an all-electric powertrain. The Lexus RX L is a premium seven-seat SUV with a petrol-hybrid powertrain. It is a very refined car and is pretty spacious too with a boot that can hold 211 litres with all seats up, 652 litres with the third row of seats down and a generous 1,656 litres when all the rear seats are down.

Sick of SUVs? Well, the striking new Peugeot 508 saloon might just be the car for you. This new 508 sits on the same EMP2 platform that’s under the 3008 and 5008, and it’s around 70kg lighter than the outgoing model.

The 508 goes on sale in September. Aside from the basic 130hp diesel, which comes with a six-speed manual gearbox, all other models will get an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Peugeot has also confirmed that a plug-in hybrid model will also join the range at a later date.

9. Subaru Outback (updated model)

Newspress Newspress

Not a new model, but Subaru’s rugged five-seat SUV gets some tweaks and updates just in time for the 182 plate change with prices starting at €46,995.

SE models come with 17-inch alloy wheels, heated front seats, keyless entry and push-button engine start, front and rear parking cameras and rear privacy glass. SE Premium models start at €49,995 and have leather seats, larger 18-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, an electric boot lid and electrically adjustable front seats.

10. Toyota Aygo

Toyota Toyota

If you are looking for a compact city car then the updated Toyota Aygo could be the car for you. Fresh faced for the 182 registration period, the Aygo is priced from €14,355 for the three-door entry level model and €14,725 for the entry level five-door model.

The Aygo is available in three trim levels and is powered by a 72hp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual or x-shift automatic gearbox.

11. Volkswagen Touareg

Volkswagen Volkswagen

The third-generation Volkswagen Touareg arrives in Irish showrooms this summer. The flagship SUV has five-seats and an 810-litre boot. Compared to its predecessor it is 77mm longer and 44mm wider – and 106 kilograms lighter too.

The Touareg’s cabin is dominated by a new ‘Innovision’ system which consists of a 12-inch instrument display and a 15-inch infotainment touchscreen display that appear to all form one single panel in the dashboard.
