The ultimate itinerary for a fun day out around Louth, Meath and Fingal

With over 180 new or enhanced TFI bus services introduced since 2022, planning your weekend has never been easier.

IRELAND IS THERE to explore, and there’s no longer any need to be limited by your car.

Whether you’re someone who doesn’t drive, or you’d simply rather enjoy the hills, coastlines, pubs and wonders of Ireland without the hassle of driving, there is a wide range of public transport services available to you that make Ireland’s most scenic destinations more accessible than ever before.

The Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan has introduced over 180 new or enhanced TFI bus routes since the start of 2022, connecting people across Ireland to towns, villages, local amenities, and the wider TFI Public Transport Network — putting virtually all of Ireland within reach, whether you have a car or not.

With its bustling villages and fascinating history, Louth-Meath-Fingal is one region that has been opened by this new network of routes, and we’ve got some inspiring suggestions for your next weekend adventure for when you want to leave the car at home, leave the driving to someone else, and relax as you explore a side of Ireland you’ve never seen before.

Boyne Valley Greenway

Whether you fancy an exhilarating bike ride along 30km of greenway, or simply a stroll in the crisp winter air in the scenic surrounds of Ireland’s Ancient East, the Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway is a perfect day out that will take you through picturesque villages, historic buildings, and forest parks.

This is served by the TFI Local Link Route 177, which operates five daily return services, also providing access to essential local amenities including: Kells Primary Care Centre, Nobber Library, and the Ardee Bypass.

Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre

The Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre is a history buff’s dream, of course, but it’s so much more than that too. The site of the 1690 battle now encompasses a gorgeous walled garden and peaceful grounds to stroll about as you immerse yourself in one of the most momentous chapters in Irish history. There are audio-visual exhibits, a laser model of the battlefield, as well as guided and self-guided tours.

The TFI Local Link 163 bus now operates six daily return services Monday to Sunday, meaning the service now runs approximately every two hours between 8am and 6pm.

River Boyne Walk

This 8km walk is perfect for your weekend exercise or for the opportunity to spend some time marvelling at Ireland’s ecology and landscapes. The Boyne river ramparts walk is perfect to spend quality time with family or friends as you take in the greenery, listening to the rushing sounds of the river and clear your head.

The walk is served by the TFI Local Link 189 route, which has recently doubled its frequency and now operates up to 10 daily return services from Monday to Sunday to connect Enfield, Longwood, Trim and Navan.

There are countless other TFI Local Link connections across Louth-Meath-Fingal and beyond, linking you to outdoor adventures, family attractions and weekend getaways – all without needing a car. And as the majority of routes operate from early morning to late evening, flexibility is on your side too. With a range of payment options to suit everyone, from TFI Leap card to cash to the TFI Go app, it’s easy to plan your trip using the TFI Journey Planner App. So why not leave the car at home, save on fuel (and stress) and explore Louth-Meath-Fingal the sustainable way?
