Off the record: The sport stories you might have missed this weekend

What do spitballs, birdies, James Richardson and the Home and Away theme tune have in common?

1. #HAUNTING BALLADRY

Or perhaps not.

Before Mario Mandzukic, unrewarded penalty appeals and Simon Cox on the left wing, the Irish fans relieved the tension of the trip to Poznan’s Municipal Stadium by singing a tune that’s been dancing through homes up and down the country for decades now.

Bringing you…. the Home and Away theme tune.

And some very drunk singers.

2. #187 YARDS, THREE FEET

A staggering shot from Rory McIlroy in his second round at the St. Jude Classic. The world number two hit this 187-yard drive to within three feet of the hole to give himself a chance at an eagle. Unfortunately he could only two-putt for birdie, but it was his best shot of the weekend nonetheless.

With his US Open defence starting on Thursday, McIlroy went into the final hole on Sunday seeking his third PGA Tour victory, but found the water off his tee-shot and finished 7th overall. Disappointing, but he has put those missed cuts behind him at least.

3. #SPITBALL

Detroit Tigers closer Jose Valverde could find himself in trouble after he was caught on camera spitting into his glove before delivering a pitch to Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco.

The Tigers went on to win the game 7-6, with the MLB set to look into Valverde’s alleged infraction.

4. #ESPANA

James Richardson and The Guardian take an animated look through the history of Spanish football. Their defeat to Ireland in Euro 2012 does not feature. Not yet.

5. #DOING A ‘ZOLA’

Prior to the Danish defeat, the Netherlands were all hope, dreams and fancy training ground backheel volleys, a la Wesley Sneijder. Unfortunately for him, he couldn’t do it when it mattered, with Michael Krohn-Dehli’s strike settling a match dominated by lots of Orange pressure, but even more errant finishing.
