What can I expect at the Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards?
Love Island star Dani Dyer and Great British Bake Off judge Sandi Toksvig were recognised for their inimitable specs style at the 23rd annual Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards in London in October 2018.
Dani received the Best Newcomer Award, while Sandi took home the Services to Specs trophy. Also taking to the stage was Ryan Thomas, who was awarded the Specs Style Couple, with his partner Lucy Mecklenburgh.
But as always the main focus of the evening, staged for the fifth year running at 8 Northumberland Avenue, was about celebrating everyday specs wearers while raising money for anti-bullying charity Kidscape.
Overall winner Shane Haron, a 30-year-old from Romford, said the cash prize would enable him to expand his business and help people dealing with trauma and anxiety. The 30-year-old said: ‘I am absolutely over the moon! It’s funny, because when I first saw the advert to enter I got the negative voices in my head saying “Oh, what’s the point, I’ll never win”, but this year has been a bit of a journey for me where I’ve purposely challenged those negative beliefs and pushed myself out of my comfort zone.’

The night also saw the Dame Mary Perkins Award for professionalism and expertise, which was presented to the Specsavers store that has made the greatest contribution to raising awareness in the importance of eye care. It was won by Pratish Bhundia, joint venture partner, and his team for their vigilance in detecting symptoms of a life-threatening brain tumour in their eight-year-old customer Kian Preist.
Presented by Rylan Clark-Neal, the awards saw specs-wearing stars take over the red carpet, including Louis Walsh, Twiggy, Eamonn Holmes, Amanda Barrie, Gemma Collins, Roman Kemp, Stephen Mulhern, Vick Hope, Fearne McCann and Oliver Proudlock.
