Man dead and crewman injured following incident on Spanish fishing boat off Kerry coast

A rescue effort was coordinated from nearby Valentia Coast Guard members.

A MAN HAS died and another has been seriously injured following an incident on board a Spanish fishing boat off the coast of Co Kerry this morning.

Authorities were alerted of the incident at 9.12am when the Coast Guard’s rescue centre in Valentia, Co Kerry, received a distress call from Spanish authorities.

It is understood a rope snapped on board the boat, injuring both men, with one later dying on the boat before he could be treated.

The incident occurred some 30 miles off the coast of Valentia island.

A rescue operation was coordinated from Valentia, involving a Coast Guard plane and helicopters from Shannon and Waterford.

The injured crew member was airlifted by Rescue 118 and is being transferred to Cork University Hospital.

The vessel had to move closer to sheltered waters off the Kerry coast to facilitate the evacuation. No other injuries were reported.
