Online troll goes to ground when confronted by Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore

A social media user made a disparaging remark about Whitmore in a post she made on Facebook about a bid to ban fox hunting.

AN ONLINE TROLL went to ground when contacted by a Social Democrats TD who has urged others like him to think twice before making nasty remarks on social media.

Jennifer Whitmore yesterday posted a video to her Facebook page of her speaking in the Dáil during a debate on banning fox hunting.

Whitmore said the debate was not about “rural versus urban” interests, but rather animal welfare.

She then read out letters from people living in rural Ireland who support a ban.

The Animal Health and Welfare Bill 2025, spearheaded by Solidarity TD Ruth Coppinger, would have prohibited the use of canines to hunt or flush out foxes and prohibit trapping or snaring of the foxes in order to kill them.

Some 124 TDs voted against the ban, while 24 voted in favour.

Under a video on Whitmore’s Facebook page with the caption “fox hunting needs to be banned”, a social media user commented: “And you need to stay away from the fridge door.”

In a new video to Instagram, Whitmore phones the social media user and asks: “Are you also a nutritionist? Do you give health advice?”

The social media user then hung up and when Whitmore called back, the call went to voicemail.

In the voicemail message, Whitmore remarks: “You came onto my Facebook page last night and you commented about my weight.

“I’m just wondering why you thought you should be able to do that, whether or not you had any qualifications on it?”

She added: “I also just want to say it is really not cool to do that. So I would ask that the next time you have the urge to troll, please think twice, think about being kind.”

Whitmore meanwhile said she is “always surprised by what people think they can say to other people online” and called for social media users to “start being a little bit kinder to each other”.
