PEOPLE TAKING PART in a Sea Scout leadership course at Dollymount Beach in Dublin today rescued a swimmer who got into difficulty.
The Irish Coast Guard operations centre received an emergency 999 call today after 2pm that a person was trapped under the wooden bridge at Dollymount Beach.
Both the Coast Guard and the RNLI were dispatched to the scene.
However, the Sea Scouts from 5th Port, Dollymount were nearby completing a leadership course and witnessed the swimmer in difficulty.
The Irish Coast Guard in Howth said they “arrived promptly by boat and took swift action”.
“Thanks to their training and leadership, the scouts rescued the swimmer from under the bridge and brought them safely to shore,” said the Irish Coast Guard, which added that no further assistance was required thanks to them.
A scout leader from 5th Port Dollymount remarked that the incident “truly reflects the leadership and preparedness we emphasise in our training”.
Meanwhile, Coast Guard encouraged people to swim at lifeguard patrolled beaches.
If members of the public think they see someone in trouble on the coast, they should call 112 or 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
