Modern home with a neighbouring historic cottage for €1.7 million

Curraghmore House in Adare is a magnificent merging of old and new.

ON FIRST LOOK, Curraghmore House looks like a period home that’s been well maintained over the years. Look closer, however, and you’ll learn that it was built much more recently – 2005, in fact.

In contrast to this, a charming house called Purtill’s Cottage, that dates to the 1600s, sits close by.

Curraghmore House, the cottage and the 27 acres they both sit on, is now on the market for €1.7 million.

It’s clear as soon as you see the entrance hall that the architect of Curraghmore was influenced by classic design. The hall is where you’ll find a reclaimed parquet floor and, wandering further into the home, you’ll spot elegant fireplaces, that are also reclaimed.

For a home that is heated in quite a traditional way – the kitchen has an Aga and the sitting room a wood burning stove – it may come as a surprise that the home has an impressive BER of B3.

The rooms on the ground floor are big, bright and well connected leaving ample choice for family members when it comes to relaxing, whether they want casual or more formal surroundings. To the left of the staircase is the drawing room that links to the elegant dining room and to the right is the family room that leads to the casual dining space and kitchen.

With its overall floor area of 511 m², extra rooms include a library, a sun room, a larder and a utility room – and this is all before you even get to the garage and car port.

The house has six large bedrooms upstairs – four of which have their own bathrooms. The main bedroom also has its own separate dressing room.

The current owners have made the most of the acres of grounds surrounding the cottage as well as Curraghmore House, dotting patios and seating areas throughout alongside vegetable gardens, fruit trees and sprawling lawns.

Four stables, a horse walker, a barn, an all-weather arena as well as a cross country course also make up the grounds of the estate.

Purtill Cottage, the house that dates to the 1600s, is large enough for a family alone. This three-bed thatched home makes for comfortable accommodation, which the next owner may want to rent out or simply keep for friends and family who visit.
