Poll: Will you vote for Fianna Fáil in the next general election?

Senator Averil Power’s departure has led to questions about the party.

WHAT SHOULD HAVE been a good week for Fianna Fáil, after its first by-election win almost 20 years, has now descended into a public slanging match.

It comes as Seantor Averil Power left the party and launched a blistering attack on the leadership on her way out.

The bad publicity is a blow to the party as it attempts to build up to a general election following its disastrous nationwide performance in 2011.

The party will point to a strong showing in last year’s local elections, where it became the largest party, as evidence that it’s ready to govern once more. But do you agree?

Today’s poll, Will you vote for Fianna Fáil in the next general election?

Poll Results:

No. (14143)
Yes. (3452)
I will consider it. (1806)
I don't know. (687)

They took the Carlow/Kilkenny by election at a canter , it’s obvious they still retain votes from the Right

If I was the left i’d stop the childish bickering between them , it’s eroding the chances of having any left Influence in the next govt .

Yea, and I’d rather not go through another disaster. A left-wing populist party with a shady terrorist background and a “tax the shite out of the rich / corporations” mentality – headed by a leader that is never questioned by its cult followers! A party that makes shite proposals such as “radio stations should be forced into playing a certain percentage of Irish music”. That and the fact that most of its candidates are well below par when it comes to the type of ability that is needed to govern.

As a party they were against gay marriage, and they’re (mostly) habitually stroke-pullers of the highest order. Hanafin is a prime candidate.
My local FF councillor (Galway City east) was all over the local press 12-18 moths ago claiming he was behind getting traffic calming measures put in around that part of town.
The result was one small speed bump in a side road a couple of months later.
I wrote to him each month, for four months, for a more detailed update on the interview he gave to the local press. He never responded.
FF are a party that traditionally jump on populist causes, and would say pretty much anything if there was votes in it.
So no, I won’t be voting for them.

I guarantee Fianna Fáil will win a lot more seats than Sinn Fein next time out, possibly double. I wouldn’t be surprised if they top FG even. Talk of them being finished is foolish. By the way I can’t stand them, but saying they are finished is just not true. 66% of Dáil TDS in Ireland are right wing, and that won’t be changing after the next election. Either FF or FG will lead the next government.

Shady terrorist background? No. Their terrorist background is clear and explicit. The referendum has demonstrated that we have the capacity to make moral and ethical decisions without the crutch of religion. So, let’s be explicit about Sinn Fein and not try to ameliorate, in the tiniest way, their background by reference to the past history of this country. We’ve grown up. I hope.

SF are a bunch of flavour of the month cowards. Their flip-flop on the marriage referendum is clear evidence that they will back whatever they think will get them elected. 100% populism without any clear vision will be a disaster. You can’t please everyone all the time.

FF have managed to coast through 4 years of leading the opposition without taking up a position on anything. Complaining about the actions the government are taking to fix the mess they made, without offering even a hint of an alternative.

Anyone further left than SF: Syriza in Greece took three weeks to do a 180 degree turn on their policies after blaming the Nazis failed. Their sympathisers here seem even less competent.

Labour have abandoned their base, largely due to being the junior partner in a government that was dealt a shitty hand. Their hands were tied but their supporters don’t care.

    Renua: Hahahahaha

FG have implemented a 53% top marginal tax rate for the highest earners (despite being the party of “the rich”) and have backed gay marriage and legislated for the X Case in an affront to their traditionally socially conservative side.

So we have a bunch of parties who either don’t have a position on anything, have a position that is just not sustainable, or have a position and don’t stick to it.

It really is a disaster of a political situation.

No I wouldn’t vote for FF, but I would ahead of SF. We’d be forced to pay higher taxes to support their core vote who are mostly on social welfare. I’m not interested in hard luck stories and I’ve been looking for a job for the last *yrs blah blah.
I left school over 30yrs ago, aged 14, no qualifications (then), I have not been unemployed in over 20yrs. I’ve worked from shoveling sh*t (literally down manholes working construction)
to running my own company for last 10 yrs (folding it up now, to much stress), went to college in the last 10yrs and got a degree in a totally different field and I’m currently employed again in a totally different field.
If you can’t get a job (long term) then your expectations are to high or you are to lazy to hold on to it. The entitled to brigade sicken me, both politicans and general scroungers. SF’s biggest audience (of course there are exceptations to this) are these people.
I almost crashed the car last year or early this year listening to Gerry Adams being interviewed one morning on Radio 1, In relation to the housing crisis, his words were that every one is entitled to not just a house but a “nice house”.
FFS why would anyone bother looking for work or trying to improve their lot when Gerry is going to provide “nice houses for everyone.
Then the SF muppets say that it’s not important that Gerry isn’t capable of simple maths….. idiots.
After all that I still wouldn’t vote FF because they made a balls of the economy, along with greedy bankers etc.
I intend (unpopular as it maybe and never did in the past) to vote for Labour, for two reasons. Firstly I was impressed that they took they hard decisions that needed to be taken for the good of the country, (I don’t believe in the magic wand idea which they did until they got into power)
even though they had to have known it was political suicide they put the country ahead of their ratings. Secondly I’m involved with a charity organisation and we wrote to every party in the area. Ged Nash was the only one that actually got involved and give us more than lip service (which every other party did except FG how didn’t even reply).
This is for the SF troll who will tell me how he worked all his life and never got the dole etc etc, You are in a tiny minority of SF voters.
As for the disgusting smearing that SF involve themselves in Grrrrhhh

Water Fluoridation would go a long way towards solving that. The state of the teeth of the people of Northern Ireland is worse than the Republic because the North is part of the UK. SF should be trying to introduce Water Fluoridation in the North if they had any members with even a smattering of a scientific or medical education. Anyone who votes for Fianna Fail is a goldfish. Do you think we are that stupid that we would forget in 8 years that they were the ones who bankrupted the entire country? They were responsible for the cuts and the taxes and the charges we have been dealing with. Yes, Fine Gael brought them in, but Fianna Fail put created the problem in the first place. In any other job, why would someone be placed back in control of the finances of a company when they robbed it blind and caused the company to become bankrupt? Silly question.

I disagree that they are a gold fish. I’m not defending FF in any way, however, not voting for any party just as a “protest” vote in a general election is a bad idea imo. You should vote for the party/independent you really want based on their policies, rather than an “anybody is better than that crowd” approach, which is what a lot of people seem to be thinking. Its also a lot of the reason FG got into power, people voted for them and labour as a protest to FF, without being aware of a lot of their plans for government.

I’d have to say…. probably – with reservations.

As with the last time round, the next election won’t be a battle of who’s best for the job but who’s the least worst option!

    - FG & LAB: Promised reform, transparency and a “new approach”. Delivered FF/Troika austerity (for some.. write-offs and cushy jobs and contracts for others), the same old cronyism, corruption and incompetence, a Taoiseach who spends his time hiding from the people and who has zero charisma and leadership ability and a much-vaunted “recovery” built on another housing crisis in Dublin and which hasn’t been felt outside it for the most part

    - SF: Still reckon that most people care about Republicanism as a core issue, go from scandal to scandal with far too much historical baggage in the leadership. Have no viable policies for a small country that absolutely depends on FDI

    - “Independents”: One-issue local candidates that are often cast-offs from the “Big 2″ anyway.

So given those “choices”, FF ARE probably the best of the worst available to us – how sad is that!

But I’d far sooner vote for FG than I’d dare vote for FF. You know what FG stand for, even if they can’t always deliver it. FF on the other hand…. Averil Power absolutely hit the nail on the head:

Of course I wouldnt vote for FF. But i want to see the same poll on the journal for FG! They have turned out to be far worse than FF but are much better at spinning everything and full of clever BS – so some people are actually stupid enough to think they’re doing something good! To be clear FG stand for much worse fascist neoliberal policies – sell off everything possible to the corporations and make the public pay through the nose for the gambling, squandering and money laundering of the banks and corporations. The fact that Enda and his crew are forcing in water charges, protecting DOB, are gung ho to implement TTIP in full and trying to push through censorship laws to restrict our freedoms (via the back door of Labour politicians with zero mandate). Its really time to call a spade a spade. I identify them this way: FG are psychotic fascist plants for the corporations and banks, FF are compliant self-serving idiots. All of them are 100% corrupt – none of them FF, FG nor Labour give a crap about the people. The whole Avril Power thing is definitely an FG pre-election stunt to destroy FF and Avril will very soon join FG. Personally I wouldnt mind voting for SF they are guaranteed to be 100% better – but then anyone could be. However I dont really think SF will go against the tide and really change much. Only a handful of Left or independent TDs standing alone would have the balls – no parties will due the ease of corrupting the party whip. So the only choice is the people – but we don’t have the balls to stand up and say enough is enough either – nor do we have the balls to take on the responsibility of real participatory democracy. Or do we? Can we take responsibility for our own destiny instead of giving it away to “representatives” who don’t represent us and whose pockets are being lined by their owners i.e. banks and corporations who keep them in power? Do we have the courage? So far Irish people who earn enough money to not be struggling have proven themselves to be self-serving cowards. Harsh words maybe but I’m sick of our self-delusion and willingness to accept the lies of the media the the fascist policies and lies of the politicians.

I want a party that is conservative on social issues and left leaning on the economy.

Always voted FF. But now, I’d ride spiders before voting for them again.

Of course not. They’ve made it known that they have no interest in moving Ireland forward, socially, and their history of economics is terrible. They’re probably the worst thing in Irish politics since Éamon de Va…oh, wait, there’s that, too.

Martin is probably the best performer in the dail in terms of rattling the shit out of those in power. He’s streets ahead of Cowen and Bertie ever were but no fianna failers spoke up and left back then. Further proof that they are all rats leaving a sinking ship who are only in politics for reasons other than the greater good. I absolutely would not vote for fianna fail but it’s not because of leadership.

Only if they’re the only candidate standing a chance of knocking a SF or ‘Fraggle rock’ independent out of getting the seat.

Of course, we will vote for a male Fianna Fáil candidate – many times over; to what other party could a #hate-filled-bigot turn to in a constituency other than Roscommon-South Leitrim?
