Poll: Does it matter that the Gaeltacht Minister isn't fluent in Irish?

Junior Minister Joe McHugh, from Donegal, has a special responsibility for Gaeltacht matters.

THE NEW MINISTER of State at the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs has special responsibility for the Gaeltacht.

However, it emerged that Joe McHugh is not fluent in Irish – and his language skills may not quite be up to honours level.

He said that he plans on immersing himself in the language. And although he was criticised in the Dáil yesterday, McHugh was defended by the Taoiseach on the matter.

What do you think: Does it matter that the Gaeltacht Minister isn’t fluent in Irish?
