4 of a Kind: Homes with balconies, so you can enjoy the sun

Cork, Cavan, Meath and Dublin are on the list this week.

IF THE LAST couple of months are anything to go by, our summers are getting warmer. This might be prompting many house hunters to add ‘balcony’ to their lists of must-haves.

This week we’re looking at four homes around the country with super raised outdoor spaces ideal for entertaining and relaxing in.

Oldcastle, Co Meath – €650,000

This large five-bed called Church Road has a floor area of 270 m² and commands views of the Loughcrew hills and Mullaghmeen Forest. Architect-designed, the structure is inspired by the Irish longhouse. A large balcony stretches along the south facing length of the house. Lots of light floods the interior thanks to floor to ceiling windows. One of the five bedrooms is on the ground floor next to a bathroom.

The house stands on a 2.4 acre site that has plenty of planting along with a polytunnel. There is also a studio space that has its own access and is home to a bathroom, bedroom, and kitchenette. This house is made for outdoor entertaining and has an outdoor fireplace with some shelter under the loggia created by the balcony above. Church Road is a ten minute walk from Ballinacree with primary school and community centre.

Virginia, Co Cavan – €650,000

Rahardrum, is another five-bed that’s even bigger with a floor area of 520 m². The sense of size hits you as soon as you see the double height hall. One of the bedrooms with its own bathrooms sits off this space to the left. The other side of the hall links to the lounge which leads to a double height sunroom that steps out to the patio area. The kitchen is large with lots of storage and connects to another more formal TV room and a utility room that has steps down to the basement.

A concrete staircase leads to the upper level where the rest of the bedrooms are. The landing overlooks the double height space. Two of the bedrooms have their own bathrooms and all of them have walk-in wardrobes. Three of these bedrooms have access to a granite balcony with glass balustrades. There’s a granite veranda to the back of the house with steps down to the basement level.

Carrigaline, Co Cork – €1,500,000

3 Brookwood in Cork has space and privacy in spades in a handy location deep in the Carrigaline woods. A 520 m² five-bed home that’s a walk away from town, it’s one of 12 bespoke homes. Built 13 years ago, it has an A3 BER thanks to solar panels and underfloor heating. Inside, the kitchen is a modern monochrome space that blends into the dining area and flows to the living spaces. Four of the bedrooms are located on the same level and they all have en suite bathrooms. The fifth bedrooms is on the level below.

On the very top level of this massive home is a sunroom. Accessed by a flight of stairs from the kitchen, it gives super countryside views as it’s wrapped in glazing. Double doors step out onto a roof deck/balcony that’s the same size as the room within. With walls painted in a punch of purple along with the pergola, it’s no doubt a great space to entertain in.  It may feel rural once you are within its grounds, yet the city is a short trip away and you can walk to many everyday amenities.
