Continued appeal over attempted murder of police officers

The PSNI discovered an explosive device yesterday which they believe was part of the attack on police earlier this week.

POLICE ARE CONTINUING to appeal for information on the attempted murder of police officers in Northern Ireland earlier this week.

Detectives from PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch investigating the attempted murder of police officers at Foxes Glen, Dunmurry on Thursday 16 May said they continue to appeal for information about the incident.

Yesterday, they said that it was only “good luck” that no children or passersby were injured or killed during the attack, which took place when police went to answer a call about a burglary in Foxes Glen.

They officers had a “lucky escape”, a spokesperson said.

While conducting follow-up searches in the area yesterday afternoon, police discovered what was believed to be an explosive device on a pathway which may have been used as a shortcut by residents of Foxes Glen.

Following examination the army bomb squad this was found to be a viable explosive device. It was taken away for further forensic examination.

It is believed this device was part of the attack on police, the PSNI has said.

Police inquiries into this attempted murder are active and ongoing and police say they would appeal to anyone with information about activity in the wooded area beside Foxes Glen during the morning of Thursday 16 May to contact them on 0845 600 8000.

Information can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
