SINN FÉIN SAYS that comments made during an RTÉ Budget 2024 programme yesterday were not directed at Fine Gael TD Jennifer Carroll MacNeill, but rather the Fine Gael party as a whole.
During a debate, aired before the budget announcement, Sinn Féin TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said, while responding to Carroll MacNeill: “I’m sure Pearse Doherty will look forward to debating with you after this budget and I’m sure he’ll look forward to putting manners on you.”
Carroll MacNeill, seemingly taken aback by the remark, then asked repeatedly “what does that mean?” as the Donegal TD went on to criticise Fine Gael’s record on “people on lower incomes.”

Fine Gael reacted strongly to the comments, with a spokesperson calling them “menacing and misogynistic.
“Is this how the Sinn Féin leadership is happy to treat women politicians? This was the Sinn Féin Chief Whip speaking to a female Junior Finance Minister on live Budget Day TV. It was highly visible and every woman watching would have seen that.”
But in a short statement, Sinn Féin said that “Pádraig Mac Lochlainn was clearly referring to the Fine Gael party and not any individual, as he made clear during the broadcast.”
His comments came after Carroll MacNeill said “I can show you all of the [budget] figures, Pádraig, if you need me to take you through it … and don’t worry I can do that when the budget speech is on.”
After the exchange, host David McCullagh quickly moved onto the live budget broadcast, and did not return to it.

@Jimmy Wallace: Bless her the poor ickle snowflake, if she cannot handle being told that manners will be put on FG then she isn’t tough enough for politics the wee dote.
FFG appear to be in paranoia mode right now.
@Jimmy Wallace: “Directed at her”
She is [Jennifer Carroll MacNeill a Fine Gael politician who has served as Minister of state at the department of finance since December 2022],
So she is a part of the government.
Pádraig Mac Lochlainn said “I’m sure Pearse Doherty will look forward to debating with you after this budget and I’m sure he’ll look forward to putting manners on you.”
Did you read the debating part?
About the budget?
To be debated by Pearse Doherty who is the opposition finance and public expenditure spokesperson?
To the government minister that was there representing the government?
Faux outrage.
@Frank Cauldhame: don’t think she or any FG member could or should tolerate some Provo loving bum boy Pikey from the back arse of no where , whose qualifications and experience in anything is nonexistent , talk about putting manners on anyone . Certainly not when it’s alleged to be enforced by the other Donegal spoofer who lied about his cv and qualifications . Shinners may well be use to the Anderstown Brigade and have other unelected stooges dictate to them Provo style , but that’s not how it works with the rest of the country . Mask slips again . Is Padraig not man enough to put manners on her ? Running off to Pearse ? What would Mary Lou and Blondie O’Neill think. ? So Mairia Cahill is telling the truth
@Frank Cauldhame: bless you, comprehension isn’t your thing. It was explicitly stated that their big boy will put manners on her , personally . Not the party ! . The same thuggish behaviour that many Non IRA aligned former Shin Fein Councillors and TD candidates , faced in the previous 10 years . Even when they did leave the party they got torrid of abuse and local smear campaigns against them eg allegations of careerism etc . You really haven’t a clue as to how SF operate .
@KTH: Christ , you must be as thick and dishonest as all the other shinners . Wee Padraig took exception to how she directly spoke to him (completely appropriate too) and he knew that he was out of his depth and not worthy to be challenging her. That frustration came out and he took faux offence as to how he was spoken to . He is and always has been a bit of a mouth but can’t take it when it’s dished back . His comment was directed solely at her and only her and even the usual half wit could see that . Evidentially not you. What do you expect when the party has to go to the dregs of society to get candidates ? That talk might work at a halting site or a IRA council meeting , it won’t wash elsewhere . Not the first time he waffled about putting manners on people
It could be interpreted as threatening…..if it was two lads outside a pub but in terms of political debate …hardly.
Jennifer Carroll MacNeill has all the hallmarks of another Maria Bailey.
@Tommy Haze: I am not a fan of her politics but she is a very good politician, active and argues her points well, also intelligent and articulate. Didn’t think Pádraig was that worried and sexist.
Now, if he had being talking to the old RTE board or Bakhurst and said that about them, for not turning up to Dail Committees or lambasted Ms Martin for not refusing to withhold funds to RTE until all of its execs had attended and answered all questions. I would have said, ” fair play to you”
@BarryH: It wasn’t sexist or misogynistic though,
We want women in politics and they should be in other big positions in companies too,
However one cannot pull the “sexist or misogynistic” card when they are confronted about something pertaining to their job,
Can’t have it both ways.
@KTH: she wasn’t confronted by something pertaining to her job though. In your example , no man or woman , holding a high up position in your example , would tolerate some low level stooge of an employee talk about putting manners on them ; certainly not from someone of McLoughlin’s pedigree . The little thug would be out the door with his P45 and blacklisted from any half decent paying job in the region after such an outburst . The putting manners on the board of directors that you and McLoughlin might waffle about might work on the board directors at Quinn Insurance but that’s not how it’s done in the civilised regions of Ireland .
@Tommy Haze: Shiners have always conflated thuggery and worse with politics . There’s a long long list of ex SF councillors and candidates who can vouch for that actually. That’s why they struggled to put more candidates on the ballot in 2020 and that’s why they will have similar problems at the next local and general election. They spent close to 20 years building up a presence in many counties in the south only to throw it away with their treatment of long time members who were the only respectable candidates capable of getting votes in their areas . People didn’t forget that at the 2019 local elections when they told SF to sod off .
@Tom tom: Shush Tom, they’ll hear you. Don’t be waking up them kangaroo courts that put their brand of manners on ya.
Disgraceful comments. If JHR said that there be outrage but these gombeens get away with it far too often. Why has the Ceann Comhairle not sanctioned such comments or is he afraid too.
With her sarcastic, superiority complex driven sarcasm in comment “ if you need I’ll take you through it” ( budget figures), this lady really does need a lesson on manners rather than complaining about being told so.
@M Bowe: No she doesn’t , not when she has to waste her time getting lectured and by a grandstanding clown of his pedigree when everyone in the room knows that he’s out of his depth. Shinners are economic illiterates . It’s kinder to them to have that pointed out them than to pretend they don’t have this problem. Too many idiots are only too gullible to believe their rubbish . Padraig knew that he was out of his depth and he then goes threatening to run back to the big boys in his gang . Lol. Himself another spoofer . Just shows , Shinners can mouth off but they can’t take it . He and his kind were spoken to appropriately.
@pBDSiMMi: waffling about feelings rather than facts doesn’t impress anyone . Clearly , you are out of your depth . Good luck to anyone who tries to challenge or rebut the facts pointed out by me by the way , everything stated by me about them is correct and can easily be verified by talking to ex members . No , I wasn’t a member but I know we’ll over 15 who were high up members . You clearly have had no dealings or experiences with SF . Best you that you shut up and listen up , rather than air whatever meaningless bland nonsense that you tried to express .
@Christy Dolan: hahaha thanks for that analysis Christy. You are correct I know nothing about any of the parties therefore I’ve never once tried to talk about any party or any subject I know nothing about. I was merely pointing out your hatred for a party and nothing more. I’ve more important things in life than to hate a political party and it’s members but each to there own. Most politicians are bad from every party.
@pBDSiMMi: have a think about why a comment like that could be
Interpreted as intimidating from a representative of that party, then ask yourself why it is interesting that it could get an emotional response
@pBDSiMMi: we aren’t talking about any party . Just Sinn Fein ! They aren’t any normal party ! If you are going to pretend to be a “shmart boi” at least deal with what was said rather than your imagined argument .
@pBDSiMMi: you have a rather childish and pathetic understanding of what the word “hate” is . Criticism of a group doesn’t automatically equate to hate . I am responding to people who have sought to down play and misinterpret the story . The only reason that you’d have given your two cents would be to downplay what I said , based on silly assumed notions , because you sure as hell can’t argue facts . Talking about wasting your time , you you make jumping into discussions that you don’t follow or understand on a regular basis ? Even if I hated SF , what relevancy is that to what I said ? NONE !
@Dominic Leleu: To be fair, Mr Doherty usually shouts on his own behalf. Always reminds me if Whitmans line ” I sound my barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world”. His fans lap it up, which is also hilarious.
This coming from a “man”who in 2016 managed to lose his seat in one of the two safe counties for SF members . Lol . Clown . Always was and always will be .
@Richard Carroll: people like her vote for her . . Better to have her in the Dail than some gypo who gets frustrated by being outclassed and out witted in a debate or negotiations and goes back to his traditions of how to settle things . What a clown of a “man” he is . Where did the Shinners get him (he’s being sulking around since 2000) Look , he’s the kind of man in a constituency where a SF seat or two is a relatively safe thing , yet he lost his . Says a lot about his pedigree and ability .
