Cork Airport to follow Dublin in scrapping the 100ml liquid rule (but not until next Christmas)

From today, passengers travelling through security in Dublin Airport no longer needed to remove liquids, gels and electronics from their hand luggage, or pack them in clear plastic bags.

CORK AIRPORT PLAN to follow Dublin Airport in easing their liquid restrictions, pending the installation of new scanning technology in December 2026.

Shannon Airport told The Journal they also hope to lift restrictions soon.

From today, passengers travelling through security in Dublin Airport no longer needed to remove liquids, gels and electronics from their hand luggage, or pack them in clear plastic bags.

Passengers are also free to carry as many liquids and gels as they want, provided they fall within the size limit – which has been increased from 100ml to two litres.

The installation of new ‘C3 scanners’ have caused the change. The scanners can generate 3D images of the luggage being scanned, making it easier for security staff to see the contents of luggage.

Cork

In a statement to The Journal, Barry Holland, Communications Manager at Cork Airport said the airport plans to have the same technology installed in a new security area before next Christmas.

The new security area will be on a new mezzanine floor featuring C3 security technology, which will prevent the need to remove liquids and large electronics from hand luggage during security screening.

“The new mezzanine floor and passenger security screening area is expected to be completed by Christmas 2026,” Holland said.

Shannon

Speaking to The Journal, a spokesperson for Shannon Airport said the technology has been installed there since 2021, allowing passengers to keep liquids and electronics in their cabin bags during security screening.

But, the 100ml limit for each liquid still applies.

They said: “While the 100ml liquid rule still applies at present, we hope to lift it soon pending regulatory approval. Any updates will be shared with passengers via our official channels.”

This means by December 2026 passengers should be able to travel through at least two of Ireland’s main airports with fewer hand luggage liquid restrictions.
