A NEW POLL published today has again shown substantial support for the abolition of the Seanad.
55 per cent of people in the latest Irish Times/Ipsos MRBI poll said they would be in favour of scrapping the Seanad. The poll also showed that 21 per cent are against the abolition while 24 per cent are undecided.
Support for abolition is higher among males, those aged over 50 and residents in Connacht and Ulster. Fine Gael supporters are the strongest supporters of the abolition while 51 per cent of Labour supporters think it should go.
The poll indicates that younger people have their doubts about getting rid of the Seanad with those aged between 18 and 24 showing the weakest support for the idea.
An earlier poll this week indicated that 52 per cent of voters would scrap the Seanad.
