Storm Amy: Nationwide weather warning issued with 'near gale force' winds expected on Friday

A Status rain warning has also been issued for 14 counties on Thursday, with Status Orange in Kerry.

LAST UPDATE | 1 Oct

A STATUS YELLOW wind warning has been issued for the whole country on Friday ahead of Storm Amy.

The storm, which has been named by the UK Met Office, will bring heavy rainfall tomorrow with strong winds expected to follow.

It is the first named storm of the new season, which began on 1 September.

Met Éireann said that Friday’s Yellow wind warning will bring “strong to near gale force and gusty southwesterly winds”, warning that it could lead to difficult travelling conditions, debris and some fallen trees.

It will be in place from 12pm to midnight.

The forecaster said a number of warnings will be issued today, with updates to follow “as certainty increases”.

A Yellow wind warning for counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry will also be in place from 4pm on Friday to 6am on Saturday.

Separately, Met Éireann has also issued a Status Yellow rain warning for counties Cavan, Donegal, Waterford, Cork, Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Longford.

In Kerry, a status Orange rain warning has been issued for tomorrow.

These warnings will remain in place from 6am until 8pm on Thursday.

The forecaster said this will bring widespread rain which will be heavy at times, with the possibility of localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions.

Friday will be wet and windy with heavy rain expected to quickly spread northeastwards across the country throughout the morning.

Strong to near gale force and gusty southwesterly winds will develop as the rain spreads, with gales or strong gales possible on western and northwestern coasts. Rain will clear eastwards to showers in the evening, with highs of 15 to 19 degrees.

Friday night will remain windy with heavy showers or longer spells of rain. Strong to near gale force winds with gales on western coasts, though winds will veer westerly and decrease fresh to strong by morning.

Strong and gusty westerly winds are also expected on Saturday, though the day will be brighter with sunny spells and showers and highs of 12 to 15 degrees.
