'Drier conditions' due over the weekend but flooding is not yet over, emergency group says

THE National Emergency Coordination Group met today to assess the flooding.

THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY Coordination Group (NECG) has said that flooding is not yet over, with overflowing rivers “still anticipated” in some areas today and tomorrow.

However, drier conditions are expected over the weekend, which will allow for some recovery in river levels.

The group met today to assess the situation following heavy rain overnight and to continue to coordinate the response to flooding.

In a statement this afternoon, the group said that larger rivers in the east, southeast and northeast are currently reacting to heavy rainfall overnight and are close to or above bank-full conditions but are expected to peak today.

High coastal water levels may impede river discharge, especially at times of high tide.

Rainfall wasn’t as bad as feared overnight, with a Status Orange rain warning for Co Louth elapsing at 12 noon and the same alert warning lifted earlier for Dublin, Wicklow and Waterford.

However, some outlets including Clontarf Baths in north Dublin were substantially damaged as a result of last night’s flooding.

The NECG said it would “strongly” advise that people closely monitoring local weather conditions from Met Éireann and river and coastal level data via www.waterlevel.ie.

“While weather conditions are forecast to improve over the weekend, surface flooding persists, and river flooding is still anticipated in some areas today and tomorrow,” the statement from the group read.

“The NECG and responding agencies continue to monitor the situation closely and are ready to respond. The NECG will meet again tomorrow to assess the situation and outlook.”

Supports

Government supports are available to those who are directly impacted by flooding. Financial supports are available to households, businesses, and voluntary, community, and sporting organisations

The NECG pointed to the Emergency Response Payment (formerly the Humanitarian Assistance Scheme) that has been made available for those living in properties directly affected by flooding.

The scheme is open in Carlow, Dublin, Kilkenny, Louth, Monaghan, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow following severe weather conditions.

The Emergency Response Payment prevents hardship by providing income-tested financial support to people whose homes are damaged from flooding and severe weather events and who are unable to meet emergency costs for essential needs, household items and structural repair.

The scheme does not provide a general compensation payment for damage or losses incurred as a consequence of a weather event, nor does it cover damage or losses that are insured under home insurance policies or would reasonably be expected to have been covered by an insurance policy.

It is available as a support for households which experience unanticipated and exceptional costs in the immediate aftermath of an extreme weather event.

However, it does not cover commercial, agricultural, or business losses.
