4 of a Kind: Impressive thatched cottages across Ireland

A unique blend of tradition and comfort, these homes are living pieces of history.

THERE ARE MANY thatched cottages dotted around Ireland that hold an irresistible charm. These homes evoke a sense of nostalgia and a connection to Ireland’s rich cultural heritage. The thatched roofs, crafted from natural materials like straw or reed make for rustic homes that look like they’ve been plucked from a fairytale.

This week, we’ve found four beautiful builds with thatched roofs, from an equestrian property in Meath to a coastal gem in Wexford.

Kilmessan, Co Meath – €950,000

Called The Thatch, this equestrian property is sprawled across nine acres of picturesque countryside. Located near landmarks like Trim Castle and the River Boyne, it’s only half an hour from Dublin Airport and three quarters from the city centre.

With five bedrooms and two bathrooms, this detached cottage spans 160 m² and has heaps of potential. There is even planning permission for four additional holiday cottages. The main thatched cottage is complemented by a derelict stone dwelling and multiple buildings approved for conversion. For equestrian lovers, there are also plans for 19 additional stables, an outdoor sand arena and a paddock.
