Do you care about ballet or opera?

‘No one cares’ about ballet and opera, Timothée Chalamet said in a recent interview.

ACTOR TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET has come under fire from the public and fellow celebrities alike after he said that “no one cares” about ballet or opera.

The Marty Supreme star made the comments during a recent interview with Matthew McConaughey.

During the conversation, McConaughey raised the topic of what he sees as people having “shorter attention spans and patience” for film – arguing that the art form is increasingly being watered down for streaming and online consumption.

Chalamet responded by saying that, while he believes there is a majority of viewers who want films to have more action earlier on and less of the slow-burn pacing associated with older cinema, there is also still an audience that wants “things that are more patient and that will pull you in”.

He continued with a comment that became the most widely-clipped and shared segment of the interview: “If people want to see, like Barbie [or] like Oppenheimer, they’re gonna go see it.

“And I don’t wanna be working in ballet or opera or things where it’s like: hey, keep those things alive even though it’s like, no-one cares about this anymore”.

Chalamet quickly added: “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just took shots for no reason,” to which he and McConaughey laughed.

If you want to watch the full interaction, McConaughey raises the topic at the 48-minute mark.

The clip has since gone viral and has been met with extensive backlash and reactions from actor Jamie Lee Curtis and musician Doja Cat.

The Metropolitan Opera also weighed in by posting a clip showing behind-the-scenes preparations followed by a full-house show, alongside the caption: “This one’s for you Timothée Chalamet”.

Stephen Faloon, General Manager at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, has also responded to the discourse: “Despite recent commentary suggesting ballet and opera are ‘dying artforms’, the appetite for them at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre is stronger than ever.”

The venue said more than 55,000 people attended ballet and opera performances there last year.

So, we’re wondering: Do you care about ballet or opera?
