For All Mankind

Sci-fi fans will be delighted to hear that For All Mankind is back for a fifth season. It’s set in an alternate universe where the space race never ended – and the Soviet Union landed on the Moon first, rather than America. This latest series is set in 2012, and will look at things like tension between colonists on Mars and people back on Earth.

Streaming on Apple TV+ from today (Friday).

Riz Ahmed has been working on this dark comedy series for 10 years. He stars in it as Shah Latif, an actor who bungles an audition but still finds himself in the running to play James Bond. But it kicks off an existential crisis for him, while at the same time he ends up tangled in an conspiracy.

Rachel (Camila Morrone) and Nicky (Adam DiMarco) are engaged to be married in a week. They head off on a road trip to Nicky’s family home, where the ceremony is due to take place. But before they can tie the knot, something very bad happens to get in the way. This is created by writer Haley Z Boston, with the Duffer Brothers of Stranger Things co-executive producing with her.

Remember the days of Blackboard Jungle? Well, TG4 has kicked off its own school quiz called Slé Anois Le Cúramach (lovely pun there), presented by Síomha Ní Ruairc.

This is a fast-paced 10-part series which sees secondary schools from across the country go head-to-head in five rounds that test vocabulary, listening skills, cultural knowledge and quick thinking. If you have a Junior Cycle student in the house, know this was designed with them in mind. 

Slé Anois go Cúramach airs Tuesdays at 7.30-8pm but repeats every Sunday at 11.45am. 

The Hardacres

This six-part period drama, which was filmed in Dublin and Wicklow, kicked off on RTÉ last week. One for those with a love for the likes of Downton Abbey, The Hardacres is based on CL Skelton’s best-selling series of novels The Hardacre Saga. It chronicles the rags to riches story of a working-class family in 1890s Yorkshire, as they move from a fish dock to a living on a fancy country estate.

Airs Sunday at 1.40pm on RTÉ One and the RTÉ Player (where you can catch up on episode one now).
