TWO MEN HAVE been charged by detectives investigating the attempted murder of a senior PSNI officer in Co Tyrone in 2023.

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was seriously injured after being shot several times at a leisure centre in Omagh in February 2023.

The attack happened while he was off duty and with his young son, packing up after coaching a youth football team.

On Monday, the PSNI arrested two men in relation to the incident.

A 45-year-old was arrested in the Stewartstown area in Co Tyrone, and a 25-year-old man was arrested in west Belfast.

They were detained under the Terrorism Act.

In a statement tonight, the PSNI said both men have been charged with the Preparation of Terrorist Acts and Perverting the Course of Justice.

They are due to appear at Dungannon Magistrates’ Court tomorrow morning.

Caldwell retired from the PSNI last December on medical grounds.
