Users encounter problems with Revenue website on property tax deadline day

The site’s online payment section was down for a period this afternoon.

Updated 2.30pm

USERS ARE REPORTING issues with using Revenue’s online service for paying the property tax as the deadline for filing your paper return via post falls today.

Despite the online deadline not falling until 28 May, users say they are being told that the website is busy today and this screengrab confirms the site was down for a period this afternoon:

A spokesperson for Revenue said the site would be “back up soon” in response to a query a short time ago and the site appears to have returned in the last few minutes.

In a statement, the spokesperson said: “This issue was caused by scheduled system maintenance that took longer to implement than envisaged. We were off the air for about 90 minutes.”

One user who contacted TheJournal.ie said the site kept crashing when they used it this morning and said they were told by Revenue that it was very busy.

“I then tried to pay over the phone [and the] payments section was busy,” they added.

Are you having problems completing your property tax return online today? Let us know in the comments.

All we need to do is get the whole country to hit refresh every 30 seconds for the next 80 years and we should be able to avoid the tax. Winning!

The newly elected Italian government is widely expected to abolish the country’s property tax. It’s time the people here made similar choices: spending cuts or property tax.

By the way; do you have to pay it if you’re renting? How do you know whether or not your landlord has paid? I’m not paying, I’m just curious as to whether or not I’m breaking any laws.

not up to you to know if your landlord has paid. If you don’t own the house it’s not your problem, unless you are receiving the valuations in to the house in your name, in which case your supposed to rat out your landlord. Either way KCCO.

Good, maybe they’ll get off their asses and do something about it rather than moaning and hoping somebody else will.
Revenue havent been given the green light to deduct from source yet, or deduct from tax credits, or what ever their thinking. In all probability they will get the go ahead at some point but to be honest from what I’m hearing it might be the least painful way for people to pay.

property tax IS legal at present.
Attack the tax is challenging the household charge not property tax.
I imagine they can find at max 50k of fools to raise 100k for the legal fight (if it’s not simply a scam as I suspect it is)
It will be defeated, and you will have appeal after appeal, still lose.
NET OUTCOME = on the hook for the tax & fines & legal costs (50k people on the hook for multi millions)

But if your foolish enough to think this is a way around it, I suppose you deserve what’s coming your way.

I’m going with Attack The Tax for this one – they are a registered company and are taking a case against the state for unlawfulness in the manner in which the tax is being collected and on the grounds that the tax the way it has been stated is unjust and again unlawful. If Acorn to Oak goes does not succeed I’m 2 euro down and no more. A legal challenge has been mounted and has hit the courtroom – July 4th is the next date and any body has the right to litigate and question whether the tax is, in fact, unlawful. The net effect of this is that whilst anything has hit the courtroom, nothing has to be declared. I do not have to declare my intention to pay tax nor do I have to declare my interntion not to pay tax. Similarly, if I have not declared I cannot be liable for penalty.

Not true, but good theory though and would be nice to think so. Kids have PPS Numbers and are assigned one the second the parents apply for Child Benefit. Every person born or working, or claiming benefits of some description in the State have a PPS number. All these people need addresses and that is the information the Revenue gets every time someone gets a job, applies for tax credits for their kiddies, and so on. The Revenue is sending out letters and forms as per PPS Number.

It is up to the individual who receives a property tax form and who is not the owner of the property to fill in the correct details and send it back to Revenue, otherwise the Revenue will just blithely deduct at source regardless.

Go join Attack the Tax, I find it very amusing the The Journal is advising people NOT to entertain this movement, even though Both the journalist and their CEO where both advised and email a number of times but they completely ignored all my email’s!! So what interest is there in ignoring large movements of Irish people “there customers”.

Attackthetax.com have meeting all around Ireland to go through all the questions or doubts you have of their journey and their plan. I thought about it being a scam and went to a meeting.
My thoughts were, I am being scammed and bullied by the government already,so if attackthetax can help me for €2 then I will take that chance, at least I have a choice in the matter.
Those who are quick to critique, why not get up off you chair and detach your hands from the keyboard, get along to a meeting and inform yourselves. Then you have a choice or an option in this matter.
Our government has become a blatant bully and putting the blame constantly at Europe’s feet, I know I am not the only person who feels we are being treated as lesser beings which a lack of intellect.
We tell our children that they need to stand up to bullies, we should lead by example.

Joining attack the tax will not stop revenue taking the property tax from you.
If you do not file a return the revenue will take what they estimated your tax amount to be.
Even if you estimated your tax amount to be lower. They will also charge fees and charges if you do not pay. So you could end up paying alot more.

Following the High Courts rejection of his “challenge” to the Household Charge, [REDACTED] (aka Peter Anthony Keegan) has been given a date for his prosecution in Westport District Court.

Attack the Tax … Acorn to Oak Communications Plc. have written to ALL Shareholders (Present & FUTURE), the State, Revenue and all the County Councils to outline some of their Rights & Priveliges.

It makes for very interesting reading … go to the “Attack The Tax” site and to “Downloads” … it is the first download. it would make for a very interesting discussion here?

As far as we can tell Peter Anthony Keegan has been up in the District Court over 5 or 6 times, and to date the State/County Council have been unable to Prosecute him for “Non-Declaration” of the Household Charge (HHC Act ). Will be heading over to the case myself on the 4th. July to observe.

Apparently he knows the law … and the law does not allow for him to be prosecuted.
… as nowhere in the HHC Act is it prescribe that he has to sign or date a Declaration.
Therefore the Act has NO FORCE in law … it is allegedly unenforceable.

Robert … perhaps you should read the letter that Acorn to Oak Communications sent to ALL their present & FUTURE Shareholders … it seems to indicate something quite contrary to what you are asserting.

A question to readers as of September 2014 where has the Attack the tax website gone. I can’t get any answer regarding why its down over 2 months. Is there something shareholders should know. Please organizers let us know where you have gone. The answer I have received several times is it will be next week. What does next week mean in an Irish or legal context. We have been abandoned by our government and maybe now by attack the tax.com. Any response.

Bit of a misleading headline. While it is property tax deadline for paper postal votes it is not for online registrations. The headline makes it seem that overall deadline is today and affected by the website problems.

@ Tim Duggan, it will be interesting to see how you feel when your home diminishes in market value and when the property tax rate goes up. Enjoy your self satisfaction for now. It won’t last.
