Vital evidence at Michaela murder scene 'not recorded'
It has been claimed that police missed evidence at the scene where the newlywed was murdered.
POLICE INVESTIGATING THE death of Michaela McAreavey “missed evidence” at the crime scene, it is being alleged today.
The preliminary inquiry into McAreavey’s murder opened yesterday.
The 27-year-old woman was found dead in her hotel room by her husband John McAreavey, 11 days after the couple were married.
Two men, Sandip Moonea (41) and Avinash Treebhoowoon (30) are accused of murdering 27-year-old McAreavey in her hotel room in January.
Both men say they are innocent.
The Irish Daily Mail reports that a court in Mauritius heard yesterday that police working on the case admitted missing evidence.
In court, police photographer Satish Jeewooth admitted that he did not take photographs of footprints in the sand to the back of the room where McAreavey was found.
Meanwhile, police constable Rajeu Hurgobin admitted he did not know the distance from the patio to the seashore near the room “because nobody had instructed him to record it”. He had been responsible for drawing up maps of the scene.
The Irish News reports that the court heard that anyone could access the hotel grounds from the nearby beach, but that the door to room 1025, where they McAreaveys were staying, needed an electronic key-card to be opened.
