'A tough sell to a guy from Belfast': Irish comedian clashes with ex-Tory MP on The Last Leg

A clip of the exchange between Vittorio Angelone and Penny Mordaunt has racked up more than 1.1 million views online.

IRISH COMEDIAN VITTORIO Angelone left an audience in stitches after a sharp exchange with a former UK government minister during an appearance on a Channel 4 panel show on Friday evening.

Angelone, who is from Belfast, made his first appearance on The Last Leg this week alongside former Conservative MP and defence secretary Penny Mordaunt.

At one point in the show during a discussion of the week’s news, Last Leg host Adam Hills asked Mordaunt about her role as an ambassador for the Music Man Project, a choir made up of people with learning disabilities.

After Mordaunt spoke about the initiative, Angelone jumped in with a joke.

“Penny’s always been such a supporter of disabled people,” he said.

“You’re very supportive of the prosthetics industry. You were promoting on Twitter an arms fair in Saudi Arabia recently.”

The comment referenced a social media post shared by Mordaunt congratulating UK companies that had exhibited at the World Defence Show in Saudi Arabia.

“You’ve got to let me respond to that,” a visibly flustered Mordaunt told Angelone, adding that investing in Britain’s defence was “rather important” given the current global situation.

When Angelone replied that he was “on your side”, Mordaunt shot back: “I don’t think you are, sweetheart.”

Angelone described the remark as “patronising”, before adding another punchline that drew applause from the audience.

“As a positive thing I think it’s brilliant,” Angelone said.

“Warmongering has always been a male-dominated industry, and you’ve really smashed the glass ceiling.”

Mordaunt then said she would like to introduce him to “some other women that put their lives on the line to defend people like you being able to do what you want to do in your life, and make jokes about the government and all sorts of things, and enjoy the freedoms that we do in this country”.

In response to her proposal to introduce him to members of the British military, Angelone ended the exchange with one final quip: “It’s a tough sell to a guy from Belfast.”

Host Adam Hills quickly moved the conversation on following the tetchy exchange.

A clip of the moment shared on Instagram by both The Last Leg and Angelone has since garnered more than 1.1 million views.
