Crime, crisps and chocolate: The week in numbers

Plus: How long would it take Ulster Bank to lose Ronnie O’Sullivan’s winnings as world snooker champion?

EVERY WEEK, TheJournal.ie offers a selection of statistics and numerical nuggets to help you digest the week that has just passed.

€150 – The fine you get for being caught throwing chewing gum on the street. The first year of introduction of the fine, in 2012, saw a 28 per cent reduction in gum litter nationwide.

€1,506 – The approximate amount lost per minute by Ulster Bank in the first three months of 2013. The bank recorded an operating profit but had to offset massive amounts of money to take care of loans it doesn’t expect to be repaid.

€296,717.50 – The apparent amount that Ronnie O’Sullivan needs to cover school fees for his kids. The reigning world snooker champion is famously bored with the sport but agreed to participate in this year’s championship – with a top prize of £250,000 – because his kids’ schools need him to stump up. (That’s enough to keep Ulster Bank going for about 198 minutes.)

€21 million – The amount that the people of Ireland have so far paid in the Local Property Tax, according to the Exchequer’s official figures for April.

66 – The number of people who had died on Irish roads so far in 2013, as of this evening with the death of two women in Carlow. At the same time last year the figure was only 51 – meaning there’s been a 26 per cent increase in fatalities so far this year.

24 – The number of Tayto Cheese and Onion Chocolate Bars in all of Australia. And boy, people are keen to get them…

28 per cent – The amount by which suicide rates among middle-class Americans rose between 1999 and 2010.

34 per cent – The proportion by which robbery, extortion and hijacking offences increased between 2007 and 2011, according to CSO data out this week.

63 – The number of years you’d have to travel back in time to find an April as windy as the one of 2013.

300,000 - The estimated number of households in Ireland which have tracker mortgages, where the interest rate is linked to the ECB’s basic rate. The cut in the ECB’s rate is good news for them – but bad news for around 400,000 non-tracker households whose rates could be forced up in order for banks to cover their losses.

100 – The drop in the number on the Live Register in April 2013. Ireland still has a 14 per cent unemployment rate.

3,726 – The estimated number of lives saved through the introduction of a ban on smoking in Irish workplaces.

74,500 – The capacity of the smallest stadium Ireland will play in in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. The Millennium Stadium in Cardiff will host Ireland’s clash with France, while the boys in green will also take to the field in Wembley (90,000) and at the Olympic Stadium (80,000).

Therefore its still the simpleton OS. Those that want to really use their phones freely go for Android.

Still im sure some disagree but they never had android. As a former iphone user I can state that the innovation died with jobs. People switch apple to Android. Does not happen other way round

I can see how lots of extra features & customisable settings might be a bit overwhelming for an iOS user.

Out of interest, why did you prefer iOS? And “I dunno like – I just did” is not a proper answer.

I made the switch last Oct – never looked back. One thing I’ve yet to hear though, are tangible examples and reasons why iOS users prefer it to Android. Android users always seem to give examples when stating their preference, but it never seems to work vice versa.

Find my phone apps don’t work when there’s no battery. You can’t turn an iPhone off unless you have the passcode. Ergo, Samsung, easier to steal than iPhone. And before anyone tells me you can just remove the sim, I know this, but it’s a lot easier to slide the back off a Samsung than take the sim out of an iPhone.

It just did is an answer. That’s the point on ios7 and apple in general – the
Main point is how it makes it’s customers feel. So I would also say I just prefer it, android is all over the place yes you can create widgets etc but is it what the
Majority want? Or do the majority want an os that makes them feel good.

    Yes!

It’s the foundations and principles that you must get right first
    Before technology.

iPhone with ios7 gives better battery life, the iPhone is lighter, it’s thinner and it has a screen size that can be used with one hand.

You cannot use an external memory card. Yes that’s true, so for anyone that needs that or needs to change the
Battery then simple don’t get an iPhone.

But my point being is do the majority of people want to do that? I don’t know the answer to that.

I like having movies on my phine and not converting them to quick time or having to use itunes for it.

With android its easy. I follow dexter and breaking bad so I just selecr as I would on pc and it download in pocket. Either watch on phone or transfer to pc but cant do that will apple its too restrictive.

IOS was the businees in 07 and 08 but samsung and Google not only caught up but blew apple out of the water. Apple now are surviving on customer base they had from years ago who have not changed. But I won’t go back. Delighted with my s3. Still a fab phone I might upgrade when S 5 comes along.

OK we get it, we don’t care, do/think what u like but for the love of god will u just leave the rest of us alone!!!

Nobody cares which you prefer. No need to keep weaselling in on people’s comments with your stupid “mini” or “Beatle” remarks. At the end of the day it all boils down to personal preference. You like it? Good. You don’t? Too bad.

By the way, liking your own comment is almost as pathetic as the majority of your pathetic comments on this post!!

Actually, I meant I was undecided about what was small, your brain or your “willy”. The matron reference was yours, hence me linking it back to the 1960s.

Anywho, you want reasons why I think iOS is on a par with Android? Bearing in mind that your positive android points mainly relate to fanboy things, which people in the real world couldn’t care less about. The flagship android devices at the time of iphone 5 release were the HTC One and Samsung S3, both the size of WW2 era battlships, and hardly attractive for lugging around in my pocket, if i want a tablet, I’ll buy a tablet.
From using an android for a number of years, I found the apps to be unstable and the OS slow as xmas at times. Say what you like about apple, but the QC on apps is decent, eliminating the freezing/crashing that plagued my old HTC.
Ergonomically and visually, I like iOS, although its not be as customisable as android. The system is said to run slower but it must be barely perceptible.
My biggest complaint is that apple blatantly try to seduce you with an overall package, iphone, ipad, mac, apple tv, and insist that you suffer itunes as syncing software.

Hell, no platform is perfect, as ever it depends on what you want from a phone. If its basic functionality, calls, text, IM, the flagship apps, etc, then the iphone is perfectly suitable. If you’re after more customisation, modular upgrading, open access to 3rd party apps, then go android.

You’re forgetting the largest truth about modern technology, that appearance and niche appeal are as important now as functionality, and thats at the root of increasing android sales. I’ll be interested to see how samsung continue to innovate in the, after all, “wheres the innovation” has been the call of android fans when talking about iphone the last few years.

google copied their android system entirely from the IOS! Google’s CEO was one of apple’s board members. For years apple innovated with new products, ipod, iphone, ipad. having the same software across all devices.

name major invention google made thats in the new phone/tablet market.

in fairness to microsoft they’ve got their own system and they’ve not really copied anybody. so even if apple takes a few ideas from other people it still can’t repair the damage done for all the ideas that have been stolen from apple.

to be fair no company should be allowed to have a monopoly so its good that android and there to put it up to apple. both systems work and are in the mainpart identical..

I don’t know what people are talking about regarding problems, I’ve had nothing but a pleasurable experience using it. I got the first Beta of iOS7 and then reverted back to iOS6 (mostly because the first beta was a severe drain on the battery).

The Android style control panel (sliding from the bottom up) should have been available in a sooner iOS version but I’m pretty happy it has it. Using it on an iPhone5 I’m noticing a considerable difference in speed and i’m finding it to be much faster than iOS6.

What is pretty cool about iOS7 is, it can use both your 3G and wireless connection for a multi-path TCP connection http://9to5mac.com/2013/09/19/ios-7-becomes-first-commercial-software-to-support-multipath-tcp-allowing-simultaneous-wi-fi-and-cell-network-connections/

It’s only a tiny thing, but I like the way the background picture for the home screen moves as you tilt the phone.. The first few times I saw it I figured I had imagined it, then I thought my eyes were going funny, but I like it now that I know it’s not me going insane :)

i love the way IOS and the phone work seemlessly. example: i want to open an app – it opems. Its not slow and when i want it to do something it does it immediatly. Its also simple, people who were never used to a smart phone eg older people/non geeks can make it work. My girlfrend had an android and she never used anything other than text, calls and emails. she broke it and now has an iphone and she’s downloading apps, no issues at all. same can be said about older people i know with an iphone who’ve gotten free upgrades. i know farmers who used to go through endless phones because of the nature of the business and they say the iphone is the toughest they’s got.

If you loose your phone all your pictures, contacts and importand information is all saved in the cloud so when you get a new one put in your password and you’ve got all your contacts again. if your phone is broken in warrenty and you take it into a store they’ll give you a new one there and then, no issues. no sending off to be repaired (in my case anyway).

Apple keep it simple, they make the phone, they make the software. most importantly is that it works.

ok then half the android users i’ve spoke to must have shocking bad (Samsung/HTC) phones or corrupted software because i hear a lot of complaints over it being slow, one lost all his pictures on a broken memory card. these phone are more than a year old, not the brand new ones out of the box. some of those phone bearly survive the 2yr contract.

its very rare to hear of a slow iphone (not impossible though) these days, apart from the 3gs which people still use and they still work. perfectly. apple are better at keeping customers happy as they make both the software and the phone. Google won’t fix your broken phone because they don’t make phones.

if i want to state the truth, i know a hell of a lot of people who simply can’t afford an iphone or the top end samsung galaxy so the only option is android for them. how much of the market do those people fall in to.

I loved Apple products until I erroneously downloaded iOS7. I would have gotten an android or Windows phone if I wanted something cheesy looking. I hate the flat look and crappy colors. And now I can’t go back to the old operating system???!!! That is cheesiest of all !!! Thanks a lot Apple-you just lost a customer.
