EVER FEEL LIKE your kitchen isn’t big enough? Are you sick of five pots and pans trying to escape every time you open the cupboard?

Having a streamlined kitchen with brilliant storage can be a huge stress reliever for a lot of people – and one that creates space.

And as we approach the start of winter, we’re spending more and more of our time in our kitchens so it’s important that they measure up – especially in relation to the space we need for ourselves at this time of the year.

Whether it’s adding a long-desired island, changing up the colour or just simply finding a place for all of your herbs and spices (a mini larder, you say?), creating the perfect cooking and dining area for winter is key.

That’s why we’re giving one lucky reader the chance to transform their kitchen this winter, thanks to Glenwise Kitchens. Not only will they get an expert consultation , they’ll also get €500 towards the makeover. So, if you are thinking about upgrading your space, what’s the secret to creating a more spacious kitchen?

David Glennon, from Glenwise Kitchens explains that there are simple tricks you can use to create a kitchen you really love.

1. Use tiles to make your kitchen seem bigger. “We like to strip everything back. Big floor tiles give an illusion of a bigger space and 60 x 60 tiles are very popular.”

2. Move your storage for optimum brightness. ”Keep tall presses away from windows as they can block light coming in and keep the colours in the kitchen neutral including the floor, presses and walls.”

3. Avoid wall tiling in the kitchen. Glennon explains that tiling on walls can be hard to maintain and a messy job to change down the line.

Only about 1 in 10 kitchens we do will involve wall tiling – we try to advise people to go for a backsplash behind the kitchen and a washable matt paint throughout.

4. Use glass to create a changeable splashback. A great alternative here would be “painting the wall with a nice glass splashback behind the cooker”. This he says is easy to maintain and change and cheap to change the look of your kitchen as you can just paint the walls to do so.
